Pro-Fee Coder (Neurosurgery)
Medasource is seeking a Pro Fee Coder specializing in Neurosurgery to ensure accurate billing and reimbursement for professional encounters. The role involves reviewing clinical documentation, assigning diagnostic and procedural codes, and collaborating with providers to maintain coding compliance and data integrity.
Responsibilities
Select and sequence ICD-10 and CPT/HCPCS codes for Neurosurgery patient encounters including, but not limited to, office visits, minor and major procedures, and surgical interventions (e.g., craniotomy, laminectomy, discectomy, spinal fusion, shunt placement, tumor resection)
Review and analyze Neurosurgery clinical documentation to ensure that CPT and Evaluation & Management (E/M) codes accurately reflect the services rendered and diagnoses documented
Abstract clinical data from the medical record to ensure that documentation supports the selected diagnoses, procedures, and discharge disposition
Validate coding accuracy for neurosurgery-specific modifiers, global surgical packages, assistant surgeon rules, and bilateral or staged procedures
Collaborate with providers and client staff for data integrity, clarification, and compliant coding practices, including provider queries as needed
Maintain strict patient and provider confidentiality in compliance with all HIPAA Guidelines
Maintain current working knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS code sets, coding guidelines, and payer-specific billing requirements related to Neurosurgery
Participate in client and staff meetings, trainings, and conference calls as requested and/or required
Qualification
Required
An active AHIMA credential (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CCA) or AAPC credential (CPC, COC, CCS-P, or related specialty certification)
Minimum of 2 years of recent hands-on Pro Fee coding experience, with at least 1 year in Neurosurgery coding
Knowledge of Neurosurgery terminology, anatomy of the nervous system (brain, spine, peripheral nerves), and common neurosurgical procedures
Ability to consistently code at 95% quality while maintaining client-specific productivity standards
Strong understanding of coding E/M visits, diagnostic studies (EEG, EMG, imaging interpretations), and surgical procedures (craniotomy, spinal decompression, fusion, tumor excision, shunt placement)
Proficient computer knowledge including MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills with all levels of internal and external customers
Preferred
Recent experience coding in a high-volume Neurosurgery practice or hospital-based Neurosurgery department
Associate degree in HIM or related healthcare field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience using RCX, Cerner, Epic, or NextGen (a plus)
