Vice President of Tax
Confidential is a leading multi state cannabis organization seeking a senior tax executive to oversee and evolve its tax function in a rapidly changing industry. The role involves guiding tax strategy across income and indirect taxes, ensuring compliance, and partnering with finance and business leadership to influence enterprise-level decisions.

Responsibilities
The role oversees federal, state, and local income and indirect tax compliance, including managing external tax service providers. Responsibilities include forecasting and managing tax payments, modeling tax impacts on profitability and cash flow, and ensuring accurate and timely filings across jurisdictions
Ownership of quarterly and annual income tax provisions under ASC 740 is a core responsibility. The role will evaluate opportunities to transition the tax provision from a fully outsourced model to a more integrated co sourced or in house approach. Strengthening internal controls and mitigating exposure to penalties or reputational risk are key priorities
The executive leads tax audit activities, acting as the primary coordinator for federal, state, and local examinations. This includes managing tax controversies, documenting key tax positions, and accounting for uncertain tax positions with clear period to period tracking
This role serves as a strategic advisor on major corporate actions such as mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and restructurings. Responsibilities include leading tax due diligence, advising on transaction structures, managing tax attributes such as NOLs and credits, and clearly communicating tax implications to senior leadership
The position partners closely with finance leadership, FP&A, Treasury, business unit leaders, external auditors, and advisors. Building, developing, and mentoring a high performing tax team is a core expectation, along with driving process improvements and efficiency initiatives
Qualification
Required
Minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in public accounting and or corporate tax
Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and local tax regulations
Advanced expertise in ASC 740 including preparation and review of income tax provisions
Hands on experience managing IRS and state tax audits and controversies
Strong working knowledge of IRS Section 280E and its application to cannabis businesses
Demonstrated experience evaluating tax implications of M&A and corporate transactions
Proven track record managing uncertain tax positions
Experience building and leading tax teams
Bachelor's degree in Accounting
CPA required
Preferred
Master's in Taxation
Juris Doctor
