VP of Estimating
Baird Consulting Group is seeking a Vice President of Estimating to provide executive leadership and strategic direction for the company’s estimating, preconstruction, and contract compliance functions. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate and compliant bids across all markets, particularly in heavy civil, substation, and energy construction projects, while managing risk and maximizing profitability.
Responsibilities
Provide strategic leadership and oversight of all estimating and preconstruction activities
Ensure timely, accurate, and competitive project bids aligned with company objectives
Review and approve estimates for major pursuits, ensuring appropriate risk evaluation and margin strategies
Oversee analysis of project plans, specifications, schedules, and contract documents
Lead bid strategy development, including subcontractor engagement, value engineering, and alternative approaches
Present estimates, bid strategies, and risk assessments to executive leadership and key stakeholders
Direct comprehensive cost analyses, including labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and indirect costs
Identify and mitigate financial, operational, and contractual risks during the preconstruction phase
Support continuous improvement of estimating accuracy through post-project reviews and benchmarking
Provide executive oversight of contract compliance and government procurement requirements
Ensure all estimates and bids comply with legal, regulatory, and contractual obligations, including FAR requirements for government contracts
Lead the development and implementation of Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) systems that integrate estimating, risk, and compliance functions
Oversee contract review processes and ensure risk assessments are completed prior to senior leadership execution
Serve as a key point of contact for contract compliance matters with clients, partners, and regulatory authorities
Lead, mentor, and develop estimating, preconstruction, and contracts teams
Establish training programs to enhance estimating accuracy, compliance awareness, and professional development
Foster a collaborative culture focused on accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement
Collaborate closely with operations, legal, finance, procurement, and business development teams to ensure seamless project transitions from bid to execution
Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and joint venture partners
Support business development efforts by contributing to pursuit planning and client strategy
Monitor industry trends, market conditions, labor and material pricing, and emerging technologies
Ensure estimating practices remain competitive, current, and aligned with best-in-class standards
Drive process improvements and technology adoption within estimating and preconstruction functions
Provide regular updates to senior leadership and the Board on estimating performance, bid pipeline, risk exposure, and compliance status
Support audits, compliance reviews, and internal assessments as required
Qualification
Required
Minimum of 10 years of preconstruction, estimating, and/or operations experience in heavy civil, substation, and energy construction
Minimum of 5 years in a senior leadership role
Proven success leading bids and estimates for large, complex projects exceeding $50 million
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related discipline
Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, pricing, and risk management
Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage multiple pursuits, and meet critical deadlines
Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels
Advanced proficiency with estimating and construction software, including: On-Screen Takeoff, Bid management systems and online plan rooms, Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, AutoCAD 3D, Bid2Win and database applications
Resourceful, adaptable, and committed to continuous improvement
Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer
Frequent use of close vision for reading plans and documents
Ability to travel to and navigate active construction sites
Regular standing, walking, sitting, talking, and hearing
Manual dexterity for operating office and field equipment
Occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions
Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and lift or carry items up to 40 pounds
