Financial Accountant

Responsibilities

Prepares periodic financial statements for agency retirement plans
Performs general ledger accounting activities
Tracks and reports administrative and benefit-related expense activity
Reconciles employer contribution reports to contributions received
Records cash receipts, disbursements, and transfers; reconciles cash activity and resolves discrepancies
Ensures sufficient cash availability to meet operational and program obligations
Ensures timely remittance of federal and state withholding payments
Executes and documents cash transfers
Reviews custodial cash reports and resolves discrepancies or exceptions
Provides requested information and documentation to internal and external auditors
Reconciles assigned fund accounts and resolves discrepancies
Tracks outstanding receivables and coordinates follow-up as needed
Provides cross-coverage and assistance to support department operations, consistent with established internal controls
Other duties as assigned

Required

Bachelor's degree in accounting or a bachelor's degree in business, finance or a closely related field plus three years of experience in performing professional accounting experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of bookkeeping for each year of the required degree
Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and theories
Knowledge of financial statements and reports
Knowledge of accounting ledgers and journals
Knowledge of computer technology related to accounting systems
Knowledge of payroll systems
Knowledge of budget preparation
Knowledge of governmental accounting standards
Ability to prepare basic financial statements and reports
Ability to review and analyze financial information
Ability to maintain routine accounting data in appropriate ledgers and journals
Ability to review revenue and cost data for the preparation of budget work programs
Ability to perform highly independent work
Ability to make independent decisions
Ability to resolve complex accounting and financial problems

Preferred

Bachelor's degree in accounting
Two years of applied financial and accounting experience
