Laboratory Assistant I

Responsibilities

Operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuges etc
Attention to detail to verify relevant data and process specimens ensuring appropriate specimens are handled, packaged and shipped to the designated laboratory according to established protocols and specimen integrity
Correct application of laboratory medical terminology and measurements
Organizational, planning, and prioritization skills to handle multiple tasks and accomplish work accurately and timely
Demonstrates problem solving by taking the appropriate actions regarding questionable findings or concerns
Performs related duties as required
Responsible for the collection of blood specimens ensuring patient safety and consistency with age-specific considerations for all patients, neonates, infants, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics as well as employees
Performs venous, capillary and infant heel sticks to ensure specimen integrity
Follows proper labeling protocols for specimen tubes/containers
Follows order of draw/collection
Performs clerical functions, processing duties, specimen receipt and distribution of laboratory specimens and training of students and employees
Performs phlebotomist duties as assigned
Must be knowledgeable of emergency procedures
Inputs and retrieves data from laboratory /hospital computer system

Required

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent required
Experience: Venipuncture experience required
Certifications/Registrations/Licenses: American Heart Association BLS CPR certification required, must be obtained within 7 days of hire

Preferred

Experience: 6 months of job-related experience preferred
