Employee Relations Consultant
Mecklenburg County is dedicated to serving over 1 million residents and is seeking an Employee Relations Consultant to provide guidance on complex employee relations matters. The role involves managing performance counseling, conducting investigations, and training staff on employee relations functions.

Responsibilities
Review, consult and respond to performance management concerns including counseling managers and supervisors on effectively addressing performance, conduct and/or attendance issues through coaching and progressive discipline
Review and provide recommendations to managers/supervisors regarding disciplinary documentation
Lead internal investigations including general complaints, formal grievances and ethics line violations and completing reports documenting findings and closing out the investigation
Serve as point of contact for external issues (ex. respond to the EEOC or other regulatory agencies)
Serves as the point of contact for employees and supervisors regarding questions relating to County disciplinary processes
Train supervisors and staff in employee relations functions, unemployment, mediation, the ADA, and workplace modification requests
Process unemployment claims and represent the County at unemployment hearings
Track County dismissal appeal hearings
Understand of leave of absence programs and disability management issues
Supports County objectives, departmental initiatives and employee relations activities
Address employee relations issues, such as harassment allegations, work complaints, or other employee concerns
Enforcing relevant employment and labor laws and regulations
Conduct Employee Relations Training sessions
Qualification
Required
Minimum of two years of employee relations experience
Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field
May require a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License
Knowledge of Human Resources best practices
Knowledge of conducting one-on-one and group conflict resolutions, mediations, negotiations and investigations
Knowledge of employment-related laws, regulations and trends
Human Resources analytical research as demonstrated by the ability to collect, develop, assess and blend information and recommendations from a wide variety of sources combined with expertise in employee relations
Change management practices in order to assist client groups with their ability to successfully manage ambiguity and/or resistance during change
Solving moderately complex problems
Maintaining an effective level of business literacy to provide a consultative approach to delivery of Human Resources services
Manage interpersonal and professional relationships with peers
Maintaining stable performance under pressure or opposition; handling stress in a manner that is acceptable to others and to the organization
Be able to receive complaints, diffuse high-tension situation and resolve conflicts
Deliver results with little supervision in a dynamic and often ambiguous environment
Multi-task and reprioritize based on organization demand and priorities
Communicating clearly and concisely – verbal or written – for a variety of audiences
Proficient in various computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite
Preferred
Extensive experience with progressive discipline and employee investigations
Human Resources-related certifications (ex: PHR/SPHR, SHRM-CP/ SHRM-SCP, etc.)
Master's degree with emphasis in Business Administration, Human Resources, Organizational Development, or related field -4 years of direct employee relations experience, preferred
