Assistant Attorney General - Antitrust & Data Privacy

The State of Utah is seeking an Assistant Attorney General in the Antitrust & Data Privacy Division to focus on data privacy enforcement and assist with antitrust work. The role involves litigation, negotiation, and collaboration with state and federal partners to protect consumer data and enforce various privacy laws.

Responsibilities

Assist and collaborate with teammates and assign and supervise staff on a case-by-case basis
Conduct all levels of civil litigation from initial intake, through investigation, pretrial, pleadings, law and motion, expert and fact discovery, trial, appeal, and post-judgment
Maintain an active caseload with minimal supervision
Coordinate with public information officer as needed
Build collaborative relationships with other state and federal enforcers
Litigate high-profile and complex cases
Negotiate resolution of complex, multi-party disputes
Communicate, write, and listen well
Draft legal briefs, contracts, and memoranda
Present on topics at conferences and panels
Learn new skills and adopt new technologies
Travel to various events and courts in and outside of Utah
Develop cases from initial complaints or inquiries
Develop, edit, and consult on legislation over antitrust, competition and data privacy

Required

Strong knowledge of general antitrust and competition laws, federal and state data privacy laws, and other related areas of law
Experience with performing investigation and civil litigation in federal and state court
Experience and skill to perform all above responsibilities
Pro-growth and humble mindset
Communicate well within a team environment
Strong ability to read and interpret difficult texts and sources of law
Understand complex legal processes and procedures, including multidistrict litigation
Perform legal research using case law and other techniques
Understand and follow laws governing access to public and private records
A Juris Doctorate is required
Must be able to travel as required
Valid driver license required to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state per UCA 53-3-202(1)(a)
Where statute mandates, active membership in the Utah State Bar prior to the end of the statutory probationary period
Three or more years of civil litigation experience, including experience litigating a busy caseload in federal and state court

Preferred

Formal education in economics, data privacy, or computer science
CIPP/US certification, or current work towards those goals
