CIVIL ENGINEER I - III

The State of New Hampshire's Department of Transportation is seeking Civil Engineers I, II, or III for their Bureau of Bridge Maintenance. Responsibilities

Inspects construction of civil engineering projects to assure the contractor’s compliance with the plans and specifications
Make field measurements of construction work items and perform engineering calculations for analysis and documentation
Prepares project records to document the quality and quantity of the completed construction
Checks survey layout performed by contractor
Recommends to supervisor solutions to conflicting design requirements in the plans or specifications
Inspects safety devices to ensure the safety of the traveling public, pedestrians, and construction workers
Maintains good public relations by answering questions from abutters and the general public
Administers minor resurfacing and highway contracts
Performs work in full conformance with all risk management, safety, and environmental standards, regulations, and administrative orders
Plans, schedules, and coordinates detailed phases of construction projects to ensure a coordinated work effort
Identifies and seeks to resolve conflicting design requirements using good engineering practice and by complex coordination efforts
Supervises the training and technical education of subordinate personnel to enhance their ability to perform assigned duties
Prepares and approves the progress payments to the contractor

Required

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering
Engineer-in-Training Certificate issued by the NH Office of Professional Licensure and Certification
Valid driver's license and access to transportation for statewide travel
Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the Department of Transportation
Master's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering
Eighteen (18) months of post baccalaureate experience engineering
Four (4) years of post-baccalaureate experience in engineering

Preferred

Knowledge of the fundamentals of engineering including a working knowledge of advanced high school mathematics
Knowledge of surveying, material testing and elementary design
Skill in the use of surveying, material testing and drafting instruments and calculators
Ability to make simple drawings, tracings and technical calculations
Ability to perform simple laboratory tests and assume inspection responsibilities
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, members of the public and other employees
Knowledge of mathematics, including trigonometry and its application to field surveying and engineering computations
Knowledge of the standard practices of civil engineering as applied to design, construction and maintenance activities
Skill in the use of engineering instruments and testing laboratory equipment in field or office
Ability to perform precise survey work, make moderately difficult technical computations and estimates, reduce field notes and draw complex preliminary and final plans and compile engineering data and statistics
Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications
Ability to organize the work of skilled and unskilled workers
Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering with special reference to the activities of the appropriate specialty
Knowledge of modern methods and techniques related to the design, construction and maintenance of public works
Knowledge of engineering surveying and soils and materials engineering
Ability to perform all the mathematical computations required in engineering surveying and design operations
Ability to prepare, interpret and use civil engineering plans, maps and specifications
Ability to plan and supervise the work of assistants
Ability to communicate effectively
