Paralegal (Veterans Advocacy)
The Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County is a nonprofit charitable law firm dedicated to ensuring equal access to the justice system for low-income residents. Responsibilities
Supports attorney in representation of veterans in cases involving Family Law, Child Support and modifications, guardianship and some landlord/tenant matters
Performs legal research to promote success in litigation and remains current on all developments in Florida law affecting veterans
Conducts interviews with clients at the office
Provide billing reports, statistics, and case reports for project funders
Investigates and develops cases, including conducting necessary interviews and consulting appropriate agencies and resources, conducts e-filing and prepares hearing folders
Drafts letters, memos, pleadings, briefs, and other legal documents and written materials
Maintains accurate and complete records and files regarding cases; keep appropriate billing records
Screen clients, engage in intake and make referrals, and follow up referrals of clients to appropriate alternative or additional sources of assistance
Develops and maintains relationships with social service agencies
Provides community training in areas affecting veterans and caregivers
Serves on community, bar, and county committees where feasible
Attends staff and other meetings in the community as assigned
Maintains confidentiality of all information handled
Complies with all agency policies and procedures
Works with other staff members to form a positive, supportive team atmosphere
Must work the days and hours to perform all assigned tasks and tasks and be courteous in achieving all performance requirements, including attendance standards and work deadlines
Must maintain courteous, professional, and effective working relationships with employees, clients, and community partners
Assists the Executive Director and/or supervisor with special projects, assignments and any additional duties as deemed appropriate or as needed
Qualification
Required
Must have 2-4 years of legal experience and/or Bachelor's in Paralegal Studies or related studies
Excellent verbal and written skills and case management abilities
Must have a professional attitude and pleasant manner with the public
Excellent computer and word processing skills. Proficient in using MS Outlook, MS PowerPoint, MS Word, Excel software
Typing speed testing at 55 wpm
Proficiency in spelling, punctuation, and grammar
Ability to draft pleadings, familiarity with e-filing and the civil court procedure
Prior experience with the litigation process, participation in preparation of trial folder for trials and evidentiary hearings
Ability to independently handle a large, diverse and fast-paced caseload
Excellent networking and relationship-building skills
Compassionate and comfortable working with a diverse client base
Outstanding project management skills; ability to set priorities, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines
Must have a demonstrable commitment to understanding the issues of low-income constituents and be able to appreciate and work with a culturally and demographically diverse population
Occasional out-of-area travel and overnight stays may be required
Preferred
Knowledge of Veteran Benefits and culture is beneficial but not necessary
Experience with community outreach and planning and delivering public presentations
Bilingual (Spanish) preferred, but not required

Vacation leave earnings equal 2.4 weeks a year (beginning the first of the month after 30 days of employment) and increases to 3 weeks a year after two years of employment.
