Research Toxicologist I

Responsibilities
Research and evaluate new and existing ingredients and formulations against The Honest Standard, internal restricted substance lists, and global regulatory and safety frameworks
Conduct core toxicological assessments including: Hazard identification, Dose–response assessment, Exposure scenario characterization, Risk characterization for ingredients, impurities, and finished products
Propose risk management measures as needed (e.g., use restrictions, cautionary labeling, formulation changes)
Identify higher-risk ingredients, formulations, or raw material substitutions and collaborate with product teams to troubleshoot safer alternatives aligned with product category and use conditions
Manage relationships with suppliers, CROs, and third-party laboratories to ensure timely execution and delivery of documents and services
Facilitate the completion and maintenance of toxicology deliverables, including:
Toxicological Risk Assessments of products (TRAs)
Raw material human safety risk assessments
Proposition 65 exposure based risk assessments
Safety substantiation memos and scientific justifications
Coordinate SDS development and updates with external vendors
Coordinate in vitro and clinical safety testing as needed to support product launches and claims
Assist with third-party certifications and verifications (e.g., EWG), including data collection and scientific justification
Communicate ingredient and formula safety updates, decisions, and rationale clearly to cross-functional partners
Contribute to internal documentation, decision logs, and safety summaries to support transparency and alignment
Qualification
Required
Master's degree in Toxicology, Pharmacology, Environmental Health, or a related scientific discipline
1–2 years of experience in Consumer product safety assessment and/or toxicology testing
Foundational knowledge of toxicological principles, including hazard identification, exposure assessment, and risk characterization
Strong scientific research, data interpretation, and technical writing skills
Ability to manage multiple projects and timelines in a fast-paced environment
Preferred
PhD in Toxicology or a related field
Familiarity with consumer product or cosmetic regulatory frameworks (e.g., U.S., EU)
Exposure to alternative testing methods, NAMs, or in vitro safety approaches
Experience working with CROs, suppliers, or third-party testing laboratories
Interest in safer chemistry, sustainability, and human- and planet-centric product design
