Phlebotomist-Receptionist

Responsibilities
Orders test/s accurately in the Lab Information System (LIS) to generate collection labels specific to each patient
Collects specimens when requested such as nasal swabs, nasopharyngeal collections, throat cultures, and skin scrapings
Obtains blood specimens for analysis by drawing blood from patients, using venipuncture and capillary blood collecting techniques. Uses proper tube and labels with appropriate information. Specimen preparation may include accessioning, entrifuging and aliquoting
Submits specimens to Medical Technologists and Medical Laboratory Technicians for testing
Confirm/process patient information regarding laboratory testing from outside agencies/satellites facilities utilizing computer systems
Maintains laboratory work area in clean and orderly condition; disposes contaminated supplies and materials in the proper waste container to prevent spread of disease to patients, visitors and personnel
Maintains/requests/order/stock supplies as necessary in order to keep materials available at all times
Receives specimens into the laboratory from all areas and properly processes them into the department via LIS
Answers telephones and responds to calls
Perform all procedures in a professional manner while maintaining patient dignity. Courteous with patients, verify correct patient information and explains the procedure about to be performed
Consistently uses time between tests to departmental advantage by: assisting with office duties or performing other duties as requested
Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served proficiently
Assesses information relative to patient’s status and interprets this information to identify the age specific needs of each patient
Provides phlebotomy training for internal employees and external students in a professional manner
Identifies, independently resolves, and documents identification discrepancies and specimen problems including inadequate volume, compromised integrity and inappropriate specimen type. Responsible for specimen recollection and/or physician/patient notification when call backs are needed
Send specimens to the Laboratory utilizing the pneumatic tube system when available
Functions independently in any work assignment. Communicates resolution of problems to appropriate supervisor
Uses appropriate computer system(s) effectively notifying supervisor of observed computer problems
Performs patient registration in the Laboratory Information System in the offsite locations
Performs waived testing, e.g., BD Veritor Covid antigen test
Qualification
Required
High School Diploma or equivalent
Three (3) months experience in medical laboratory
Able to multitask and handle stressful situations
Able to communicate effectively
Preferred
Specialized training program in medical terminology and phlebotomy procedures
