Salt Lake County is seeking a Horticulture Program Coordinator to plan, organize, and coordinate garden and greenhouse activities. The role involves supervising prisoner workers, managing operational activities in Jail Gardens, and facilitating educational opportunities.

Responsibilities

Supervises and instructs prisoner workers participating in the Horticulture Program
Designs, develops, and administers the agriculture plans for the Jail Gardens
Manages day-to-day operational activities in the Jail Gardens
Manages the public produce sales and other related events
Tracks resource use and garden production information
Generates statistical data and progress reports
Works cooperatively with program stakeholders and participants
Researches and develops educational opportunities for prisoner workers and the public
Facilitates Jail Garden tours for stakeholders and the public
Instructs Food Handlers Permit classes to prisoner workers

Required

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Horticulture or other closely related field; OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience in horticulture, agriculture, and/or landscape design
A pesticide applicator license and ServSafe certification must be obtained within three (3) months of the hire date
The successful applicant must pass a required background check through fingerprinting and enrollment in the continuous RAP Back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements
Knowledge of best horticulture practices and standards
Knowledge of data collection and analysis
Knowledge of basic computer programs (Microsoft Office)
Knowledge of problem-solving and decision-making techniques
Knowledge of safe food handling procedures
Knowledge of ponds and habitat maintenance
Knowledge of integrated pest management techniques
Knowledge of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)
Skills and abilities to educate prisoners and the public on gardening practices
Skills and abilities to manage and track the production and sale of produce
Skills and abilities to inventory tools, seeds, produce, and equipment
Skills and abilities to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
Skills and abilities to manage the operation of two heated greenhouses and produce gardens
Skills and abilities to serve as a resource for landscape horticulture and pond projects
Skills and abilities to work with a variety of stakeholders in various settings
Must be able to lift 50 pounds

Benefits

$1 per hour worked in environmental pay
