Research

Responsibilities

Expressions of interest are sought from outstanding domestic and international candidates for PhD study within the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Faculty of Engineering, Monash University
This PhD project will contribute to MSE’s strategic research initiative on accelerating Australian green ironmaking, addressing critical challenges in the transition to sustainable metallurgical processes
The successful candidate will develop a fundamental scientific framework to tackle key research questions in the Australian context, including impurity management, microstructure evolution, ore processing, and the development of green ironmaking infrastructure
Leveraging these state-of-the-art research capabilities, the candidate will conduct high-quality, impactful research in high-temperature materials science, with a particular focus on phase transformations in ceramics, metals, and other solid-state systems
The PhD candidate will join the MSE Metallurgy and Corrosion cluster, working within a multidisciplinary team spanning theory, advanced characterisation, and computational modelling

Required

Background in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Solid-State Physics, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline
Strong interest in thermodynamics, kinetics, and microstructure evolution in materials under high-temperature conditions
Ability to conduct independent, self-motivated research
Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
Fulfil the criteria for Masters by Research & PhD admission at Monash University
Completed or in the process of completing a Bachelors H1 Honours Degree or already hold an H1E Bachelors and/or Masters degree
Satisfy Monash's English Language Proficiency requirements

Preferred

Graduated in the top 10% of your year level
Graduated from a well ranked university
Have authored peer-reviewed research publications
Possess excellent written and verbal English skills
