Deputy Director/Fellow - Africa Program

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit organization providing strategic insights on global security. The Deputy Director will manage the Africa Program, contribute to policy outreach, and support program development and staff supervision.

Responsibilities

Drafting proposal concept papers
Developing new project initiatives
Arranging speakers and overseeing high-profile meetings and events
Draft original commentaries, analysis, and reports; prepare project-related research products (including multimedia); and contribute to collaborative research and writing tasks, such as drafting of editorials and other opinion pieces
Contribute to analysis of key emergent policy debates in Congress, the Executive Branch and among interest groups
Take initiative to develop new writing, research, and project ideas
Develop work plans and timelines for research projects and coordinates both internal and outside experts to execute them on schedule
Contributing to the active cultivation of the external image of the CSIS Africa Program and its ongoing efforts to shape opinion
Respond effectively to donor requests for timely briefings
Taking a lead role in sustaining high morale of the Africa Program team and ensuring appropriate emphasis on staff development
Conduct ongoing consultation and review of staff and intern work programs, performance, and emergent special projects
Drafting annual budget for approval of Program Director
Monitoring program revenue and expenses
Preparing financial updates

Required

B.A./B.S. required
Minimum 3 years related experience in international relations or business, and knowledge of developments in Africa and US-Africa relations preferable
Ability to work closely with a range of individuals with diverse interests, backgrounds, and dispositions
Ability to write research reports, concept papers, business correspondence, etc
Must possess strong communication skills including the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from constituency groups, media, governmental entities, and the general public
