Director of Development
Habitat for Humanity Peninsula & Greater Williamsburg is seeking a Director of Development responsible for leading all fundraising initiatives, donor relations, and special events. This senior leadership role is accountable for revenue growth and ensuring the professional execution of development initiatives while supervising the Special Events Manager.
Responsibilities
Develop and execute the annual development plan aligned with organizational goals and budget
Lead all fundraising initiatives including individual giving, corporate sponsorships, major gifts, grants, and special events
Build and manage a diversified funding pipeline to ensure sustainability
Serve as primary relationship manager for major donors, corporate partners, and key stakeholders
Develop customized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies
Maintain high-quality donor records and relationship notes in CRM
Directly supervise, coach, and evaluate the Special Events Manager
Set strategic direction, revenue goals, and performance expectations for all events
Approve all event budgets, timelines, vendor contracts, and sponsorship strategies
Ensure professional planning and execution of all signature events, including but not limited to: Raise the Roof Gala, Build & Believe Breakfast, Run the D.O.G. 5K Race, Golf Tournament
Hold the Special Events Manager accountable for: Detailed timelines and run of show, Vendor management (venue, catering, AV, rentals, décor, etc.), Volunteer coordination, Registration and guest experience, Sponsor fulfillment and recognition
Provide leadership presence at events to ensure quality, donor experience, and issue resolution
Lead corporate sponsorship strategy and pipeline development
Support and guide the Special Events Manager in sponsor outreach and fulfillment
Build long-term strategic partnerships with businesses and community organizations for both monetary and in-kind gifts
Collaborate with the COO to identify, write, and manage grant opportunities
Maintain grant calendar and compliance requirements
Partner with the CEO to engage the Board in fundraising and sponsorship efforts
Prepare development reports and updates for Board and committee meetings
Support board members in donor cultivation and solicitation efforts
In collaboration with COO and CEO, develop planned giving marketing campaign
Oversee creation of publications to support fundraising activities
Represent the organization at community events and networking opportunities
Maintain accurate and timely records in CRM and tracking systems
Oversee sponsorship tracking, invoicing, and receivables in coordination with Accounting Director
Provide regular performance reports to CEO
Ensure compliance with all donor, financial, and ethical standards
Lead, develop, and hold accountable the Special Events Manager and development staff
Foster a culture of professionalism, urgency, organization, and excellence
Set clear priorities, deadlines, and expectations
Address performance issues promptly and directly
Qualification
Required
5+ years of nonprofit fundraising experience
Proven leadership of staff and/or direct reports
Demonstrated success leading major events and sponsorships
Strong project management and accountability skills
Experience working with Boards of Directors
Proficiency with CRM software, Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, Gmail), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and other web-based tools
Preferred
Experience in a multi-event, fast-paced nonprofit environment
Experience in affordable housing, community development or similar mission-driven work
Grant writing experience with demonstrated success
