Junior Data Scientist
The City of New York is seeking a highly motivated Junior Data Scientist to join the NYPD Data Science team. The role focuses on developing data science services to solve departmental challenges and improve decision making through analysis and research.

Responsibilities
Develop data science services that solve Department challenges
Harmonize analysis and research to advise leadership on policy and improve Department decision making
Work with both structured and unstructured datasets (e.g. text, geospatial, network data)
Write clean code to integrate data science services with business intelligence tools
Qualification
Required
A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health
A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization
A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization
Education and/or experience which is equivalent to '1' or '2' above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in '2' above
Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in '1' and '2' above
Experience with Python and machine learning
Ability to work with both structured and unstructured datasets (e.g. text, geospatial, network data)
Ability to write clean code to integrate data science services with business intelligence tools
Strong project management and interpersonal skills
Preferred
Experience developing full-stack software applications using Python, DQL, and/or R
Ability to develop statistical and machine learning models (e.g. scikit-learn, statsmodels, PyTorch)
Ability to develop metrics to measure business objectives and improve the operational effectiveness of the Department
Ability to develop data visualizations and business communication for department leadership to improve organizational decision making (e.g. Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib)
Ability to work with unstructured data, such as text, geospatial, and network data (e.g. NLTK, GeoPy, networkx)
Ability to write clean and simple code to automate business tools such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ArcGIS, and Power BI
Excellent oral, written, analytic, organizational, and interpersonal skills and attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines
Ability to work both independently and on a team
Ability to work cross-functionally to strengthen relationships with internal stakeholders, agencies, and academic institutions
Knowledge and understanding of criminal justice policy and research literature
