HIL Developer - Microgrid & DER Control Platforms

Responsibilities
Design and develop Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing environments for microgrid and Distributed Energy Resource (DER) control platforms using RTDS
Integrate and validate embedded control systems with simulated power networks utilizing advanced HIL technologies
Collaborate effectively with software, hardware, and systems engineering teams to ensure accurate emulation of real-world operational conditions
Develop comprehensive test plans, configure HIL test benches, and implement automated testing procedures
Analyze test results, identify anomalies, and support root cause analysis and resolution initiatives
Thoroughly document processes, configurations, and outcomes to ensure full traceability and compliance with regulatory standards
Contribute to the ongoing improvement of HIL testing methodologies and supporting infrastructure
Maintain robust and consistent HIL test coverage across all critical control functions
Facilitate early identification and resolution of integration issues prior to field deployment
Uphold stringent documentation standards to ensure complete traceability of all testing activities
Foster strong collaboration between engineering and quality assurance teams
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field, with 3+ years of experience in embedded systems or control systems testing, or a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
Minimum of 2 years' experience with HIL testing tools and real-time simulation environments for microgrids (such as RTDS, Typhoon HIL, OPAL-RT)
Minimum of 2 years' experience configuring and troubleshooting microgrid controls and communications in simulated environments
Minimum of 2 years' experience standard power systems drawings, including single line diagrams and ladder diagrams
Minimum of 2 years' experience in automating tests and analyzing HIL results to validate system performance
Experience using HIL platforms, including RTDS, Typhoon HIL, or OPAL-RT
Proficiency in programming languages and tools such as Python, MATLAB/Simulink, or similar scripting and modeling applications
Knowledge of power systems, distributed energy resources (DERs), and microgrid control logic
Familiarity with industrial communication protocols, such as Modbus, DNP3, and IEC 61850
Analytical and debugging skills
Communication and documentation abilities

No relocation is being offered for this position. Candidate must reside within a 50-mile radius of Warrendale, PA to be considered. Active-duty military candidates are exempt from this requirement
Preferred
Prior experience with HIL, CHIL, and PHIL simulation of microgrids and DERs using RTDS
Working knowledge of PLCs, Relays, Communication Gateways, Automatic transfer switches, primary and secondary DER Controllers, and other commonly used controllers in microgrids
Understanding of Power Amplifiers and related calculations
Ability to develop and execute test cases for scenarios like islanding detection and black start
Familiarity with microgrid and DER standards from IEEE, NEC, and other relevant standards associations
Knowledge of test automation frameworks and CI/CD integration
Familiarity with cybersecurity standards for control systems
Ability to work in an agile development environment
Demonstrated experience with scripting languages such as Python or MATLAB for test automation and data analysis
Proficiency in troubleshooting complex system integration issues across hardware and software boundaries
Experience with root-cause analysis methodologies and reporting technical findings to cross-functional teams
Ability to generate comprehensive technical documentation and training materials for users and stakeholders
Proven track record of participating in industry forums, technical workshops, or publishing papers related to power systems simulation and microgrid technology
