Responsibilities
Own core billing/payments/invoicing workflows end-to-end (not supporting someone else’s system)
Design and maintain idempotent APIs and consumers (safe retries, dedupe keys, exactly-once business semantics)
Build reconciliation and recovery paths: detect incorrect state, explain failure modes, and implement repair tooling (automatic and manual)
Model money-moving state changes with auditability
Evolve existing systems safely: schema migrations, versioned events, rolling deploys, backfills, and compatibility guarantees
Work in an event-driven architecture (Kafka or similar) as part of business workflows
Maintain production services on Linux: runtime behavior, performance, observability, and debugging in real systems
Qualification
Required
6+ years building backend services in Python and Go/JVM
Direct ownership of revenue-critical transactional systems (billing, payments, invoicing, subscriptions, credits, refunds, revenue attribution)
Strong mental model for correctness: idempotency, consistency, reconciliation, auditability, state machines
Experience with event-driven workflows (Kafka or similar) where events drive business state transitions
Comfortable working in and improving existing systems, you cannot rewrite
Preferred
You've designed a ledger or ledger-like system with auditable entries
You've integrated with payment processors and handled edge cases (disputes, refunds, partial captures)
You've built reconciliation jobs and operational tooling used by finance/support teams
You can explain real failure modes you've seen in billing systems and exactly how you handled them
