Control and Automation Engineer
Advantage Technical is seeking a Control and Automation Engineer to develop and support automated systems for subsea fiber optic cable operations. The role involves collaboration with various engineering teams to ensure the automation initiatives are safe, reliable, and production-ready.
Responsibilities
Design, implement, and maintain PLC-, industrial PC-, and robot-controlled automation systems
Integrate motion control hardware (servos, gantries, position feedback devices)
Support machine vision systems for cable inspection and alignment
Troubleshoot and resolve controls-related issues
Develop and validate safety-critical control solutions (interlock logic, fail-safe behaviors)
Lead commissioning, trials, and acceptance testing of new automated equipment
Collaborate on fixture design, guarding, and risk reduction
Analyze downtime data and implement preventive improvements
Create and maintain system documentation (wiring diagrams, PLC code archives, O&M standards)
Update Standard Procedure Instruction Manuals (SPIMs) to reflect automation changes
Work with Training and Certification Package (T&CP) team to align operator training materials
Train operators and technicians on automation systems and troubleshooting
Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities
Perform other duties and special projects as assigned
Overtime may be required based on business needs
Qualification
Required
3+ years of industrial automation or motion control experience may be considered in lieu of degree
Strong PLC and motion control programming (Allen-Bradley or equivalent)
Knowledge of industrial networking and safety system design
Experience integrating cameras and sensors into automated systems
Ability to read mechanical schematics and electrical wiring diagrams
Proficiency with data acquisition tools and documentation systems
Effective troubleshooting and analytical problem-solving
Strong collaboration skills across all levels of the organization
Familiarity with mechanical system interfaces
Regular attendance and flexibility to work any shift as needed
Must be able to pass a 'Fit for Duty' physical exam
Preferred
Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Controls, Mechatronics, or related engineering discipline preferred
Exposure to Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement principles preferred
