Assistant Director of Planning for GreenThumb
The City of New York is seeking an Assistant Director of Planning for GreenThumb, which provides support to community gardens across the city. The role involves overseeing long-range planning efforts, managing a team, and handling a multimillion-dollar budget for various community gardening initiatives.

Responsibilities
Under supervision of the Deputy Director, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, oversee GreenThumb’s long-range planning efforts and implementation of special projects in community gardens
Manage and support a team of 6 employees overseeing a variety of programs and projects, including but not limited to capital improvements, property management, community visioning and garden renovations
Oversee a multimillion-dollar capital and expense budget related to capital projects and expanded garden materials
Manage special initiatives related to community gardening and urban agriculture, including GreenThumb Community Gardens at NYCHA
Manage an expanding portfolio of infrastructure projects and garden renovations with external organizations
Oversee grant funded projects, including the $46 million USDA-NRCS grant to increase access to water supply infrastructure
Perform research, analyze data, prepare reports and complete tasks as assigned in various areas related to urban agriculture and community gardening
Qualification
Required
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
Education and/or experience which is equivalent to '1' or '2' above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in '1' above
Preferred
Master's degree or coursework in urban planning, geography, environmental science, landscape design/architecture, or a related field
Experience in community gardening, community organizing, organizational development or a related field
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Experience working with community groups, non-profits and government agencies
Ability to work evenings and weekends and outdoor environments
Ability to manage multiple assignments with competing deadlines
Second language a plus
Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and related applications
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud and/or GIS
