Assistant Counsel

The City of New York is seeking an Assistant Counsel for the Office of the General Counsel located in Central Park. The role involves assisting in negotiating, drafting, and reviewing agreements, conducting legal research, and advising on legal issues related to the Agency's operations.

Responsibilities

Under general supervision, with latitude for independent judgment and unreviewed action and decision, assist in negotiating, drafting and reviewing agreements on behalf of the Agency, including agreements for operation of the Agency’s concessions and the maintenance & operation of park properties and facilities
Research and advise Agency staff on a variety of legal issues related to the use of Agency property, employment law, land use and relations with nonprofit partners
Assist in the review and interpretation of existing laws, rules and regulations and in the preparation of new rules and regulations for the Agency
Perform legal research and draft memoranda and correspondence for the General Counsel’s Office
Work with the New York City Law Department concerning ongoing litigation matters, including discovery and witness and trial preparation
Respond to Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests

Required

Admission to the New York State Bar
One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar
Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086)
Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment

Preferred

Experience or demonstrated interest in public service
Experience in drafting and negotiating contracts
Litigation experience
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and data management programs
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to organize, plan, coordinate and implement large and ongoing projects
