Network Engineer

Technology at Arizona State University is seeking a customer-focused Network Field Engineer to support the installation, maintenance, integration, and troubleshooting of network infrastructure. This role involves hands-on field work combined with strong documentation and collaboration with operations and engineering teams to ensure high-performing network environments.

Responsibilities

Install, configure, integrate, repair, upgrade, and maintain network infrastructure including:
Copper and fiber cabling
Network switches, routers and firewalls
Wireless access points
UPS systems and environmental or security devices
Perform on-site diagnostics and troubleshooting of connectivity, hardware, power, and configuration issues, serving as an escalation point when required
Provide direct onsite and remote technical support to customers and internal stakeholders, ensuring timely resolution of incidents and service requests
Conduct scheduled upgrades, emergency response, and preventative maintenance across campuses or customer sites, including participation in a 24x7 on-call or shift-based rotation as required
Coordinate closely with customers, operations, and engineering teams to validate alarms, plan maintenance windows, restore services, and implement network and security solutions
Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation, including network diagrams, cabling records, service tickets, time logs, and configuration details using ticketing and SNOW platforms
Ensure compliance with safety, operational, and organizational standards (e.g., OSHA) when working with power, ladders, lifts, confined spaces, or mounted equipment
Leverage AI in routine tasks and contribute ideas for using AI to improve the unit’s efficiency and overall performance
Take responsibility for fostering a positive culture, upholding organizational values, and championing engagement in all its forms
Collaborate across teams and actively participate in ET/ASU events and programs

Required

2+ years of experience with Category and fiber cabling, including termination and testing (Fluke/OTDR)
Working knowledge of Layer 2 networking, TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, SNMP, and Wi-Fi fundamentals
Experience with network vendors and platforms such as Arista (required/preferred), and familiarity with Cisco, Juniper, or Ubiquiti devices
Familiarity with wireless, telephony, cloud-based management tools, and network test equipment
Experience supporting security infrastructure such as firewalls, VPNs, CCTV, or access control systems
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and standard business productivity tools
Ability to read construction drawings, create or redline low-voltage plans, and coordinate with facilities teams
Customer-service oriented with strong interpersonal and communication skills
Detail-oriented, accurate, and committed to delivering high-quality service
Self-motivated, able to work independently or as part of a team
Professional appearance and demeanor
Strong problem-solving skills and a commitment to continuous learning and staying current with evolving network and security technologies
Proven experience with network cabling, hardware installation, and field-based troubleshooting
Experience with service ticket management
Provides basic personal tools; advanced test equipment may be supplied by the organization

Ability to lift and move network equipment (typically up to 55 lbs or more as required)

Preferred

Industry certifications preferred: Arista ACE Certification, CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+; Cisco CCNA; or equivalent vendor certifications
