Grounds Technician

The University of Colorado Boulder is seeking to hire a Grounds Technician to maintain the appearance, safety, and functionality of outdoor spaces on its campus. The role involves performing routine grounds maintenance, operating various equipment, and ensuring the upkeep of landscaped areas.

Responsibilities

Maintain assigned landscape areas in accordance with industry standard Best Management Practices (BMP)
Perform general landscape maintenance activities including bed maintenance, hardscape cleaning, mulch installation and string trimming
Assist with repair and maintenance of asphalt, concrete, flagstone and pervious paver surfaces
Assist with landscape construction projects as needed
Care for ornamental plants and trees through proper pruning, fertilizing and hand watering
Control weeds in turf, bed and hardscape areas using approved cultural practices
Supervise landscape areas and report problems, such as overly wet or dry conditions, plant health issues and safety concerns
Assist with trash collection and litter pick-up in assigned work area including turf panels, landscape beds, hardscapes, window and stair wells, water ways and native areas
Report vandalism, illegal postings, trash and recycling issues to Work Leader and/or Supervisor
Remove snow and ice from streets, parking lots, sidewalks and other areas as assigned
Apply sand/salt or anti-icing chemical mixtures using various equipment
Responsible for the proper use, maintenance and care of all assigned equipment (tractors, large mowers, vehicles, GUVs, 2 cycle equipment, hand tools, etc.)
Complete regularly assigned preventative maintenance (PMs) and schedule additional maintenance or repairs as needed
Adhere to all University safety guidelines and policies
Responsible for the safe operation of vehicles, equipment and tools
Seek instruction on safe operating procedures from Supervisor as needed and use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
Wear prescribed personal protective equipment
Exercise caution during high-heat or winter weather events
Follow standard methodologies for toolbox talk safety communications
Complete all training as required by the UCB Environmental Health & Safety department

Required

One (1) year of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position
Plant care, soil health, and seasonal landscape maintenance basics
Strong understanding of techniques for turf care basics and weed control
Proven sustainable landscaping practices
Experience operating groundskeeping equipment and power/hand tools
Attention to detail and ability to work independently or as a member of a team
The use of a university vehicle is required for the performance of some of these duties
Adhere to all University safety guidelines and policies
Responsible for the safe operation of vehicles, equipment and tools
Seek instruction on safe operating procedures from Supervisor as needed and use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required

The anticipated work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday from 7:00am - 3:30pm. May be required to work evenings, weekends, or holidays
This position operates University vehicles and requires a Driver's License in good standing

Preferred

Three years of experience related to the work performed by this position
Certified Grounds Technician (Professional Grounds Management Society) or similar designation
Demonstrated knowledge of horticulture, turf management, or plant care
Experience operating a vehicle mounted snowplow and a tractor/utility vehicle mounted snowplow
Previous experience performing landscaping at a University or higher education campus
