Responsibilities
Microsoft SQL Server Database Administration
Administer, configure, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server databases supporting the platform
Manage database availability, performance, security, and capacity planning in the AITC environment
Implement and maintain database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery procedures
Maintain detailed database maintenance and backup logs, including activity type, date, and time, for inclusion in Quarterly Progress Reports
Apply security controls, access management, and password policies in accordance with federal requirements
Optimize OMOP CDM tables using indexing strategies, table partitioning, and parallel processing techniques
Tune SQL queries and stored procedures to support common analytical and operational workloads
Monitor database performance metrics and proactively identify and remediate performance bottlenecks
Support high-volume ETL workloads while maintaining database stability during operating hours
Support execution, monitoring, and validation of ETL processes loading VA and DoD production data into the OMOP CDM
Ensure data integrity, completeness, and consistency across ETL runs
Troubleshoot and resolve ETL-related database issues, including load failures, data anomalies, and performance degradation
Collaborate with ETL development teams to ensure database structures support efficient ETL execution
Analyze DoD data structures and support mapping of source data elements to OMOP CDM tables
Assist in identifying relevant DoD clinical data tables across clinical domains of interest
Validate database structures and relationships required for OMOP CDM compliance
Support correlation and comparison of DoD source variables with corresponding VA variables within the database
Contribute to ETL Design Documents, Data Analysis and Mapping Design Documents, and DoD Data Limitations Documents from a database perspective
Document database-related transformation rules, constraints, and data quality considerations
Coordinate with VA business ETL teams and technical stakeholders to support ongoing database and ETL improvements
Provide database-related discovery support and technical recommendations when unexpected data or structural issues arise
Qualification
Required
Proven experience, 3+ Years, as a Database Administrator supporting Microsoft SQL Server in enterprise or government environments
Strong expertise in SQL Server performance tuning, indexing, partitioning, and query optimization
Experience supporting ETL workflows and large-scale data integration initiatives
Familiarity with healthcare or clinical data models and large structured datasets
Ability to produce clear, audit-ready technical documentation
Experience working in secure or regulated environments
Preferred
Experience supporting VA, DoD, or federal health data platforms
Familiarity with the OMOP Common Data Model (CDM)
Exposure to OHDSI tools and observational health data environments
Prior experience working within similar federal research infrastructures
Understanding of clinical data domains and healthcare informatics concepts
