Senior Software Engineer – Alpha Lab
SoftWriters is a leading provider of healthcare technology solutions that empower long-term care pharmacies. They are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join their innovation-focused engineering group, responsible for designing and building AI-enabled product capabilities while ensuring compliance and scalability in production environments.
Responsibilities
Design, build, and iterate on AI‑enabled product experiences, including LLM integrations and multi‑step AI‑driven workflows across cloud and on‑device applications
Implement application‑layer patterns for AI features (orchestration, tool use, context handling, fallbacks, latency optimization) in partnership with AI and platform engineering teams
Rapidly prototype new product concepts—turning hypotheses into working software and measurable outcomes
Balance short iteration cycles and experimentation with disciplined engineering practices appropriate for regulated healthcare environments
Contribute to evaluating AI feature readiness for production, considering quality, reliability, cost, latency, and operational supportability
Build prototypes with a clear, realistic path to secure and compliant production, incorporating privacy, auditability, and data‑handling requirements from the start
Write clean, maintainable, well‑tested code and continuously raise the engineering baseline through refactoring and pragmatic design improvements
Participate in design reviews and architecture discussions, proposing tradeoffs with a focus on stability, correctness, and scalability
Implement automated testing (unit and integration) and contribute to CI/CD pipelines that support repeatable builds and deploys
Add instrumentation and diagnostics (logging, metrics, tracing) so experimental services can be observed, evaluated, and improved quickly
Collaborate closely with product, design, QA, and platform partners to ensure prototypes are deployable and operable in real‑world environments
Mentor teammates through code reviews, pairing, and technical discussions; model strong engineering judgment and collaboration
Stay current on emerging AI and application engineering techniques and share learnings across the Alpha Lab team
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent professional experience
7+ years of experience building and supporting production software applications (web, services, mobile, or device)
Experience delivering software in highly regulated environments (healthcare, medical, pharma, finance, defense, energy), with an understanding of security, privacy, auditability, and compliance constraints
Strong software engineering fundamentals, with a consistent record of writing maintainable, testable, production‑quality code
Hands‑on experience implementing AI‑enabled features in real workflows, including practical considerations around reliability, guardrails, monitoring, failure modes, latency, and cost
Proficiency in one or more of the following ecosystems: .NET / C#, JavaScript / TypeScript (React, Angular, Node.js), Mobile (iOS, Android, React Native)
Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and modern Git‑based workflows
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in fast‑moving, iterative environments with evolving priorities
Preferred
Experience building software for pharmacy, long‑term care, or adjacent healthcare domains
Experience shipping AI‑enabled features using techniques such as: LLM integrations (Azure OpenAI, OpenAI, Bedrock, etc.), RAG, embeddings, and vector search, Agentic workflows and orchestration patterns
Experience with on‑device or edge‑capable applications (mobile, embedded, offline‑first environments)
Familiarity with regulated‑friendly design patterns (least privilege, encryption in transit/at rest, audit logging, data minimization)
Cloud‑native development experience (Azure preferred), including containerized services and/or serverless architectures
Experience implementing observability practices (structured logging, metrics, tracing, dashboards)
Background working in innovation labs, R&D teams, or incubator environments where success is measured through validated learning and rapid delivery
