Undergraduate Student Research Assistant

The Ohio State University is seeking an Undergraduate Student Research Assistant to provide professional research assistance in a dynamic agricultural research environment. The role involves conducting analyses, managing data, and preparing findings for various presentations and publications.

Responsibilities

Support the team in conducting computer-based analyses and documenting results, including serving as the primary point of contact for select contacts
Analyze data in the lab and manage data quality and organization
Assist with preparing research findings for presentations, publications, and extension materials (e.g., factsheets, social media, and website content)
Prepare analysis reports for commercial ornamental nurseries and edible greenhouse operations; track engagement and managing relationships
Supervise lab tasks and train other student research assistants as needed, fostering a dynamic collaborative team through shared troubleshooting and mutual support
Other duties and special activities assigned, such as ad-hoc support at commercial operations
Collect, manipulate, and organize research data (e.g., operational costs, fixed costs, investment figures); operate specialized statistical software; support, oversee, and train other undergraduate students in lab tasks
Execute computer-based simulations; format and analyze data for manuscripts; develop extension materials for information sharing (e.g., factsheets, social media posts, website updates) to disseminate research findings to stakeholders
Group management, supply procurement, or flexible support for emerging project needs, including proactive contributions to team problem-solving

Required

1–2 years of relevant experience required (2–3 years preferred) in agricultural business management or protected agriculture systems
Hands-on experience with agricultural operations, data analysis, and management
Demonstrated ability or strong interest in leading analytical projects and serving as the primary point of contact for collaborators, including clear communication and problem-solving
Valid Ohio driver's license and ability to drive
Flexibility for fieldwork travel. Must be available for ~100-mile round trips to commercial operations (e.g., daily during intensive periods in August-May; seasonal intensity varies, with lighter demands in off-season)
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and enthusiasm for teamwork in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary laboratory, with a commitment to collaboration. This includes taking ownership of tasks and mistakes, proactively proposing solutions, and actively supporting colleagues to resolve challenges as a unified team

Preferred

Experience supervising staff
Familiarity with data management software (e.g., Excel, R, Stata) and agricultural extension outreach
Background in economics and agribusiness management
