Postdoctoral Research Associate - Environmental Scientist

Responsibilities

Design experiments and perform laboratory investigations with inorganic mercury and methylmercury
Acquire and analyze data using a range of analytical instrumentation
Maintain detailed and accurate records
Prepare oral and written reports
Publish and present research results in peer-reviewed journals and at conferences

Required

Ph.D. in environmental science, environmental chemistry, civil/environmental engineering, biogeochemistry, biology or related discipline
Knowledge and experience in laboratory environment
Ability to articulate a research plan with defined goals and sound experimental design. Prioritize a safe work environment and comply with all ES&H regulations
A proven publication record and ability to produce research to a high publication standard
Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary research team
Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment
For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required
All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation
To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation

Preferred

The successful candidate will have research experience in aquatic environments, with interest and expertise in one (or a combination) of the following topics: mercury biogeochemical cycling including mercury bioavailability, uptake and transformation; nutrient stoichiometry; and food web/trophic dynamics
Analytical chemistry experience working with trace metals
Experience with working with aquatic organisms
Ability to identify, analyze and summarize relevant literature
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
