Responsibilities

Supports a wide range of testing and commissioning activities through application of client testing standards, industry standards (IEEE, NETA, NFPA, NESC), and manufacturer recommendations
Works under limited supervision, independently executing moderately complex assignments, and contributing to regulatory compliance, safety adherence, and data integrity across active job sites
Provides day-to-day support to field teams, helps resolve challenges on-site, and mentors junior technicians to promote quality, efficiency, and safe work practices
Perform assigned testing and commissioning tasks for Protection and Control systems on high voltage substations
Perform on-site hands-on protective relay testing using relay test sets such as Omicron CMC 256/356 or Doble F6150. Examples of relays to be tested are SEL-311L, SEL-387, SEL-487, SEL-421, SEL-351S, GE L90, GE D60 among others
Use field forms, digital data tools, and mobile applications to document site activities
Perform equipment cleaning, inventory control, and calibration as directed
Support the Project Lead or Field Supervisor on projects
Escalate complex technical problems or unexpected field conditions to the site lead or project manager
Participate in daily safety briefings and ensure compliance with health and safety protocols
Communicate progress, field observations, and potential delays to the project team
May review the work of less experienced technicians for quality and accuracy, providing informal guidance as needed
Maintain attention to detail when filling out logs, photo documentation, and label entries
Collaborate with other technicians to maintain workflow, safety, and quality standards
Assist in monitoring subcontractor performance and activities and report observations to field leadership
Perform clerical responsibilities such as timecards, expense reports, and project reports
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs

Required

High school diploma or equivalent
Minimum of 7 years of experience in the electrical testing industry, including experience in medium and high voltage circuit breakers, power transformers, instrument transformers, and substation protection and controls testing
Demonstrable expertise on transmission, generation, and distribution relays (SEL, Basler, Beckwith, and GE families) and protective schemes
Technical skills related to protective relays include relay calibration utilizing test sets/measuring devices such as Omicron CMC 256/356 and Doble F6150, control scheme testing, testing of the sensing CT/PT circuits, ability to upload settings to microprocessor relays, and static & dynamic testing of microprocessor-based protective relays
Proven experience with electrical field testing standards, practices, and procedures, such as NETA, IEEE, and NFPA applicable standards
Demonstrable knowledge of testing electrical distribution, generation, and transmission projects with voltage levels ranging from 15 kV to 500 kV, including protective relays and circuit breakers
Experience using technical software such as ProTesT, Protection Suite, ENOSERV RTS, Omicron Test Universe, and AcSELerator Quickset for testing purposes and data review
Experience with reading and understanding electrical drawings
Ability to identify routine field challenges and equipment issues, responding within established procedures and escalating atypical conditions
Skilled in preparing field logs, sketches, and digital reports
Physical stamina to work in outdoor and physically demanding conditions
Experience collaborating with contractors, technicians, and engineers
Demonstrated commitment to field safety, quality, and regulatory compliance
Good interpersonal and verbal communication skills for field team collaboration
Capable of critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from inspection and testing results
Capability to support a wide variety of tasks in dynamic or changing environments
Ability to follow procedures, meet deadlines, and maintain accountability in the field
Commitment to continued learning and development in technical field services
Understanding of confidentiality and ethical behavior in technical environments
Competent self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment
Reliable, punctual, with the ability to work independently or with a team
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies
Willingness and physical ability to lift up to 35 pounds individually, and up to 100 pounds with assistance
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, basic color differentiation, and the ability to adjust focus
Valid driver's license and clean driving record
Must be willing to travel (up to 80%)

Preferred

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Technology degree in a similar discipline
Experience in testing and troubleshooting electromechanical relays
Experience in testing and commissioning electrical equipment on high voltage substations such as CTs, CCVTs, PLC systems, and DC systems, including batteries and battery chargers
Current OSHA 30-hour or 40-hour HAZWOPER certification
