Technical Writer & Copy Editor
CEDIA is the association for smart home professionals, dedicated to advancing the smart home industry through education and advocacy. The Technical Writer & Copy Editor will develop, edit, and maintain high-quality educational and technical content, ensuring clarity and accessibility for diverse audiences.

Responsibilities
Translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise, and user-friendly content for technical and non-technical audiences
Collaborate with subject-matter experts and working groups to gather accurate information, while consolidating content and material into a digestible learning outcome – print, online, etc
Ensure documentation is structured logically and follows best practices for adult learning
Assist with education courseware development per the scope of work that will be defined by the Education and Technology and Standards Department. Including, but not limited to, white papers, related documents, and in-person training
Edit and proofread content for clarity, grammar, tone, consistency, and accuracy
Enforce style guides, terminology standards, and branding guidelines
Fact-check content and ensure alignment with current product functionality and policies
Collaborates with all members within the Education and Training Department, as well as the Marketing Department
Maintain and organize documentation and review and update existing content to reflect product changes or user feedback
Ensure content meets accessibility and usability globally
Qualification
Required
Mastery of Adobe, InDesign, Canva, and/or other content layout software
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise, and user-friendly content for both technical and non-technical audiences
Strong collaboration and stakeholder-management skills, with experience working alongside subject-matter experts, cross-functional teams, and working groups to gather and synthesize accurate information
Demonstrated ability to structure content logically and apply adult learning principles to create effective, engaging educational materials
Advanced editing and proofreading skills, with a keen eye for clarity, grammar, tone, consistency, and accuracy
Proficiency in applying and enforcing style guides, terminology standards, and brand guidelines across multiple content formats
Strong research and fact-checking skills, ensuring content accuracy and alignment with current product functionality, standards, and organizational policies
Excellent organizational and content management skills, including maintaining documentation libraries and updating existing materials based on product changes or user feedback
Ability to collaborate effectively with Education and Training teams as well as Marketing and other internal stakeholders
Ability to apply accessibility, usability, and inclusive content standards to ensure materials meet global accessibility requirements
Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Technical Writing, Journalism, or a related field
Minimum of 3 to 5 years' experience as a Technical Writer, Copy Editor, or similar role
Preferred
Experience within the Smart Home Industry or similar trade strongly preferred
Content and publishing design experience
Experience developing, laying out, and supporting education and training content across print and digital platforms, including courseware, white papers, technical documentation, in-person training materials, and content managed through online CMS systems
