Principal Data Engineer

The Principal Data Engineer will own the performance and reliability of the database infrastructure while leading a team, optimizing queries, and building automation to enhance data access across the organization.

Responsibilities
Lead, mentor, and develop a team of database engineers
Analyze and optimize SQL queries, execution plans, and indexing strategies to improve application performance
Provide production support and manage incident response through our ticketing system
Build automation and custom tooling to reduce operational overhead and database implementation costs
Design and execute migrations for Azure SQL compliance
Implement CI/CD pipelines for database schema deployments and data changes
Partner with development teams to establish patterns that scale data access across the organization
Manage team workload, priorities, and capacity planning
Contribute to standards, documentation, and knowledge sharing that elevate the team's overall capability
Qualification
Required
10+ years hands-on experience with SQL Server, including performance tuning and optimization
3+ years leading or mentoring technical teams
Experience with Azure SQL and cloud database migrations
Proficiency building automation scripts and tooling (PowerShell, Python, or similar)
CI/CD experience deploying database schemas (Liquibase, Flyway, or similar)
Strong troubleshooting skills and comfort with production support responsibilities
Preferred
Knowledge of the financial services / insurance / securities compliance industry's concepts, practices, and procedures a plus
Familiarity with database DevOps practices and infrastructure-as-code
Masters' Degree in a related field
