Industrial Hygiene Inspector

Responsibilities

Inspect demolition, abatement, and renovation work sites to verify compliance with asbestos and lead-based paint regulations
Conduct AHERA inspections in public and private schools and prepare reports for submission to the EPA
Identify chemical, physical, and biological hazards at work sites and recommend corrective actions to eliminate risks
Collect samples of suspect asbestos-containing materials and lead-based paint for laboratory analysis
Document site conditions and violations through detailed reports and photographic evidence
Initiate enforcement actions, including permit revocation or referral for civil or criminal proceedings, when necessary
Communicate compliance requirements and inspection findings to contractors, property owners, and other stakeholders
Testify in administrative or court proceedings related to enforcement actions and regulatory compliance
Maintain accurate inspection records and ensure timely reporting to program leadership and regulatory agencies
Collaborate with internal teams to support statewide health hazard control initiatives and special projects

Required

Bachelor's Degree in chemistry, physics, industrial hygiene, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, or a closed related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in safety, health, or environmental work
An equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred

Experienced in conducting compliance inspections for asbestos and lead-based paint activities across demolition, abatement, and renovation projects in pre‑1978 target housing and child‑occupied facilities; consistently verifies work practices and documents violations with corrective action recommendations
Advanced proficiency in identifying chemical, physical, and biological hazards at work sites; evaluates processes and containment measures and recommends site‑specific controls to protect workers, the public, and the environment
Intermediate proficiency in collecting and handling samples of suspect asbestos‑containing materials and lead‑based paint; maintains photographic evidence and detailed field notes to support regulatory findings
Advanced proficiency in preparing technically accurate, grammatically correct inspection reports and compliance documentation; communicates findings clearly to contractors, property owners, and program stakeholders
Demonstrated expertise in conducting EPA AHERA school inspections and submitting compliance reports to federal authorities; integrates inspection outcomes with program enforcement workflows when required
