Responsibilities

Lead and define the long-term strategy for coal technologies, including next-gen cycles (e.g. AFC / Allam–Fetvedt Cycle), carbon capture/utilization/storage (CCUS), coal gasification and integration with other technologies (e.g. hydrogen, waste heat recovery)
Monitor industry trends, policy, research, and competitor developments in advanced coal, carbon capture, and carbon regulation
Provide strategic direction on the role of coal in the company’s broader generation/decarbonization roadmap
Oversee the development, planning, design, permitting, and deployment of coal and advanced coal technology projects
Manage project financing, modeling, capital budgeting, and risk assessment for coal / CCUS / AFC projects
Lead the selection and management of technology licensors, engineering partners, EPC contractors, and consultants
Ensure integration of coal projects with plant operations, fuel supply logistics, emissions control systems, and site infrastructure
Serve as the technical authority in advanced coal cycles (AFC, oxy-combustion, fluidized bed, etc.), carbon capture, and coal systems engineering
Provide oversight and review for mechanical, civil, structural, thermal, and systems engineering aspects of coal/CCUS projects
Ensure alignment between advanced projects and existing coal operations (if applicable), understanding coal plant performance, maintenance, degradation, retrofit challenges, and operational constraints
Coordinate with operations teams to ensure that new designs are operable, maintainable, and cost-effective
Lead regulatory and permitting strategy for coal and carbon capture projects (federal, state, regional, environmental, carbon regulation)
Interface with governmental agencies, research institutions, trade associations, and funding agencies
Drive stakeholder outreach, public acceptance, and community engagement related to coal/carbon projects
Develop pro forma financial models, sensitivity analyses, and business cases for coal/CCUS/AFC projects
Monitor project financial performance, cost control, and milestone tracking
Contribute to corporate capital planning, funding strategy, and investor / board-level presentations
Build, mentor, and manage a high-performing team of engineers, technologists, project managers, and support staff in the coal technology domain
Coordinate with other functional leaders (HR, legal, finance, operations) to attract and retain top talent
Foster collaboration across internal and external teams and promote knowledge sharing
Identify technical, financial, regulatory, and execution risks inherent to advanced coal/CCUS projects and create mitigation plans
Ensure compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, health, and risk management protocols

Required

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, or closely related discipline; MBA or equivalent advanced degree strongly preferred
Minimum 10+ years of progressive experience in coal technology, coal plant operations, coal project development, or advanced clean coal/CCUS sectors
Proven track record in leading or executing advanced coal / carbon capture projects, technology development, or pilot-scale deployments
Deep technical knowledge of coal systems, advanced cycles (e.g. AFC, oxy-combustion), gasification, emissions control, carbon capture processes, and systems integration
Experience managing project financing, budgeting, pro forma modeling, capital cost control, and commercial risk analysis
Strong leadership, strategic planning, communication, and stakeholder engagement abilities
Demonstrated ability to manage multidisciplinary teams and external partnerships (technology licensors, EPC firms, research organizations)
Knowledge of regulatory, environmental, permitting, and policy frameworks relevant to coal/CCUS in the U.S
Experience engaging with public agencies, industry consortia, R&D institutions, and carbon policy stakeholders
Ability to travel and engage in field oversight of project sites
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities in high-risk, technology-driven environments
