Public Works Crew Leader I, II or Senior - Water/Sewer

The City of Plano is seeking skilled and dependable Public Works Crew Leaders to join their Utility Operations team. These positions play a hands-on leadership role in maintaining and repairing the City’s water distribution and wastewater collection systems, providing guidance to field staff and ensuring safety on work sites.

Responsibilities

Leads the work activities of assigned maintenance staff engaged in maintaining the City’s infrastructure
Maintains, and completes daily work orders through asset management and work order software
Provides communication and job information to customers and Supervisors
Ensures work sites are safe and appropriately secured in accordance with Public Works Standard Operating Procedures
Ensures own and subordinates’ proper use of personal protective equipment and following all job site safety requirements
Operates a backhoe, tandem dump truck, loader, air hammer, chain saw, mortar mixer, pump or other related tools and equipment
Inspects vehicles, equipment and tools to ensure they are safe, clean, maintained, fueled and ready for use at all times
Addresses and resolves citizen complaints in a respectful and courteous manner through clear communication and accurate information sharing
Participates in training subordinate personnel, including Public Works Crew Leader I and II, Equipment Operators, and Maintenance Workers
Fills in for Supervisor in his/absence to provide work assignments for the day, route customer service requests, and complete required notifications or paperwork
Trained to function in Supervisor On-Call role to support after-hours scheduling and rotation
Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential
Performs water quality testing and sampling in accordance with the City’s Water Quality Monitoring Plan and TCEQ regulations
Inspects and oversees work of contractors performing maintenance or repair of city water and sewer infrastructure
Evaluates Right of Way Permits, As-Built Drawings, and other plan sets to facilitate valve crew shut-downs, contractor tie-ins, and other contractor work impacting city infrastructure

Required

Knowledge of safety practices and procedures including the proper use of personal protective equipment
Knowledge of operation, maintenance, and repair of water and sanitary sewer systems
Knowledge of tools, equipment, and materials used in Public Works
Knowledge of traffic control and excavation safety
Skill in communicating clearly both verbally and in writing
Skill in reading, interpreting and explaining water meters and performing leak assessments
Skill in providing guidance, leadership, and assistance to assigned staff
Skill in operating, maneuvering, and controlling the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, or materials used
Skill in addressing and resolving customer complaints and concerns
Skill in performing basic mathematical calculations
Skill in reading and interpreting maps, charts, and schematics
Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent
Experience: Two (2) years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water and sanitary sewer systems
Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class B Commercial driver's license prior to employment

Preferred

Lead experience is preferred
Class A preferred
TCEQ Wastewater Collection Class II (or higher) License and Water Operator Distribution Class C (or higher) License
Confined Space Entry certification and training
