Material/Process Inspector I, II or III - Atlanta, TX
The Texas Department of Transportation is hiring a Material/Process Inspector I, II, or III based in Atlanta, TX. In this role, you will perform material tests and manufacturing process inspections to ensure that materials and processes meet high-quality standards for road and infrastructure projects.
Government Administration
Responsibilities
Conducts pavement evaluations in the field
Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors and material producers and suppliers
Maintains a diary of inspection or test details
Maintains and calibrates equipment
Performs tests and inspection duties
Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement
Reports test results to field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems
Secures, logs in and prepares samples of raw materials or manufactured materials at various stages of production for testing
Drives/travels to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses and project sites to monitor status of programs
Handles material or production problems referred by less experienced inspectors
Prepares and maintains inspection or test reports and issues material reports
Reviews plans and material specifications for changes in material requirements
Coordinates core drill or auger rig operations
Advises supervisor of inspection activities and problems at plants and assists in coordinating inspections
Keeps equipment mileage and service records and schedules equipment repairs
Maintains field record books for each construction project within assigned area office
Orders equipment and supplies
Conducts nuclear density tests on subgrade, base and asphaltic concrete pavement
Observes tests and inspections and reviews reports from other inspectors; performs quality assurance for tests and inspections
Qualification
Required
High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies
Material/Process Inspector I: No experience required
Material/Process Inspector II: 1 YEAR Laboratory work, material inspection or other eng-related work
Material/Process Inspector III: 2 YEARS laboratory work, material inspection or other eng-related work
Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle
Material Process Inspector I must obtain 2 of the following certifications within twelve (12) months of date of hire: ACI Cncrt Fld Test Tech-Grd I, HMA Plant Spec-IA, HMA Roadway Spec-IB, Cert Soils & Flex Bases SB 101, Cert Soils & Flex Bases SB 102, ACI Cncrt Strength Test Tech, Aggregate Prop Spec Agg101
Material Process Inspector II must have 1 of the following certifications at the time of hire and obtain 2 additional certifications within twelve (12) months of hire: ACI Cncrt Fld Test Tech-Grd I, HMA Plant Spec-IA, HMA Roadway Spec-IB, Cert Soils & Flex Bases SB 101, Cert Soils & Flex Bases SB 102, ACI Cncrt Strength Test Tech, Aggregate Prop Spec Agg101
Material Process Inspector III must have 2 of the following certifications at the time of hire and obtain 2 additional certifications within twelve (12) months of hire: ACI Cncrt Fld Test Tech-Grd I, HMA Plant Spec-IA, HMA Roadway Spec-IB, Cert Soils & Flex Bases SB 101, Cert Soils & Flex Bases SB 102, ACI Cncrt Strength Test Tech, Aggregate Prop Spec Agg101, HMA Mix Design Spec-II
Skill in: Giving attention to detail and reviewing information to identify any errors and problems; ensuring consistency and clarity of information
Performing calculations using algebra, trigonometry and geometry
Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems

Knowledge of: Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance

Skill in: Safely using, operating, and maintaining applicable equipment
Conducting laboratory tests
Calibrating equipment
Training in a classroom, office, or field environment

Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
Visual Acuity-determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures
This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical
