Kyocera SGS Precision Tools is seeking a Manufacturing - Design Engineer who will be responsible for the conceptualization, design, and development of indexable cutting tools. The role involves collaborating with teams across manufacturing, R&D, quality, and sales to create innovative cutting solutions while ensuring product designs meet manufacturability and performance targets.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with application engineers and customers to understand tool performance requirements and optimize tool geometry
Design and develop indexable cutting tools using SolidWorks
Create and manage 3D models with appropriate tolerances, GD&T, and material specifications
Ensure product designs meet manufacturability, cost, and performance targets
Interface with suppliers and internal production teams to resolve issues related to design and production
Support product lifecycle management, including revisions, and cost reduction initiatives
Determine BOM and manufacturing methods for a special or modified tool holder
Create tool holder drawings and 3D models as necessary for customer approval and production
Estimate production times, labor requirements, and related costs to provide information for quotations and manufacturing decisions
Enter all manufacturing information into the company ERP system that is necessary to produce all new and standard tool holders
Create and evaluate manufacturing methods for both new and standard products transferred from Japan
Determine and address root causes that hold back the manufacturing process from reaching its full potential and efficiency
Develop, evaluate, and improve manufacturing methods increasing machine efficiency, capacity, and utilization by reviewing current processes and suggesting improved methods for process optimization
Support rearrangement of the plant layout, equipment, and operations for optimum utilization
Support manufacturing and maintenance personnel to prevent problems with machinery and related equipment
Ensure that all manufacturing product specifications are developed and testing procedures are in place before releasing to manufacturing
Provide technical training, guidance, and resource support through participation of Kaizen, lean or other process improvement initiatives
Assess the usability, environmental impact, and safety of a design
Collect and analyze data from tests of prototypes and modify designs as necessary
Support the quality management system and ISO certifications
Attend assigned industry trade shows as a technical advisor as needed
Support all current and new manufacturing processes and machinery introductions
Represent manufacturing-design engineering on cross-functional teams
Assist in the assessment of vendor/subcontractor evaluation; requires interfacing with customers, reading technical literature
Work with manufacturing to develop Zoller inspection programs
Work with set ups and operators to determine the best feed rates and wheel SFM speeds to maximize production as well as tool life and correct fixturing
Stay informed concerning new manufacturing technologies and equipment to manufacture and reduce cost through efficiency
Special assignments as required by manufacturing leadership team

Required

High school diploma or GED
Bachelor's degree in mechanical, software, or manufacturing engineering; or seven years' related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Ability to read, write, and communicate in English
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and meet requirements set by KSPT insurance carrier
Ability to read machine dials, computer screens, tool drawings and precision measuring devices with or without reasonable accommodation
Ability to monitor machine sounds to identify changes in order to take appropriate preventive action with or without reasonable accommodation

Preferred

3-5 years' experience designing toolholders or precision machined components
Proven ability to design for manufacturability and optimize machining processes
Strong knowledge of machining processes (turning, milling, drilling, etc.)
Proficient with 3D CAD and CAM with SolidWorks and Surf Cam preferred software
Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking. Work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry
Previous experience with Kaizen, Six Sigma, Lean, 5S or related. Green Belt preferred
Computer literacy: basic skills with MS applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
