Immigration Law Paralegal

Justice North is a nonprofit civil legal aid organization providing free legal services to low-income individuals across northern Minnesota. They are seeking an Immigration Law Paralegal to support the newly established Immigration Law Unit by providing essential legal and administrative support to an immigration attorney representing eligible clients.

Responsibilities

Conduct initial client interviews and assist with intake, eligibility screening, and issue spotting for immigration legal services
Prepare and organize immigration filings, including forms, affidavits, declarations, cover letters, and supporting documentation
Draft correspondence and assist with preparation of applications, petitions, motions, and responses submitted to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), immigration courts, and other agencies
Maintain accurate and complete case files, track deadlines, manage document collection, and ensure timely filings
Maintain frequent contact with clients to gather information, explain documentation requirements, assist with affidavit preparation, and provide case updates
Assist attorneys with preparation for immigration court hearings and USCIS interviews, including compiling exhibits, preparing case summaries, and organizing evidence
Attend hearings, interviews, outreach events, or clinics with attorneys as needed and provide logistical and client-support assistance
Establish and maintain relationships with community partners, advocates, and service providers serving immigrant and New American communities
Participate in trainings, workshops, and continuing education related to immigration law, trauma-informed advocacy, and cultural competency
Comply with timekeeping requirements, organizational policies, and applicable federal and state regulations

Required

Prior paralegal experience is required; immigration law experience is strongly preferred
Experience working with low-income, immigrant, or vulnerable populations and demonstrated cultural humility and sensitivity
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with careful attention to detail and accuracy
Ability to manage multiple deadlines and tasks in a fast-paced, client-centered environment
Comfort with technology, including case management systems, document management, and remote collaboration tools
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and willingness to travel within Justice North's service area
Flexibility and willingness to assume additional responsibilities as the Immigration Law Unit develops

Preferred

DOJ Recognition and Accreditation (R&A) is preferred but not required at the time of application. Candidates must be willing to work with Justice North to apply for DOJ accreditation within 6 months of hire. Justice North will support training and the accreditation process
