Principal Engineer
Forest Lawn Memorial Parks and Mortuaries is seeking a knowledgeable and highly skilled Principal Engineer to support the development of architecturally unique locations. This role involves overseeing civil engineering design, ensuring compliance with regulations, and collaborating with architects and external agencies on complex engineering initiatives.

Responsibilities
Communicates the organization’s position to consultants, regulatory agencies, and the executive team
Assesses and anticipates strategies for project plans
Oversees all in-house civil engineering design, documentation, and implementation, including grading, roadway, utility, and cemetery development across all Forest Lawn locations
Directs engineering management in developing plans, designs, cost estimates, and specifications
Strategically plans and oversees engineering designs and projects, including the implementation of practices, policies, programs, procedures, and personnel activities within the organization’s engineering efforts
Leads and directs the preparation of construction documents, details, specifications, bidding documents, cost estimates, and contracts for civil engineering and cemetery-related projects
Ensures projects meet all legal, health, safety, and environmental requirements; provides updates to Legal and Environmental Compliance and confirms adherence to guidelines
Directs engineering calculations required for project designs
Conducts studies to evaluate the efficiency of engineering programs
Reviews, approves, and coordinates product and process changes to maintain or improve cost-benefit outcomes
Assesses working conditions to ensure compliance with regulations and safety standards
Ensures adherence to codes and generally accepted engineering standards
Oversees the resolution of design and development challenges
Performs site investigations
Provides oversight and guidance to the Director of Construction, Project Managers, Designers, Drafters, and Engineers
Consults with Project Managers on project estimates, schedules, bids, construction activities, change orders, and inspections
Ensures preparation of required legal descriptions, documents, and draft agreements for City, County, and other agencies, and coordinates review with Legal
Directs and manages the work of outside consultants in preparing and executing plans, specifications, and reports
Directs survey and aerial mapping activities as needed
Partners with the Senior Vice President – A&E on sitewide grading, roadway, utility, and infrastructure master planning across all Forest Lawn locations
Communicates and collaborates with governmental agencies, consultants, and internal staff
Partners with Legal and Environmental Compliance on entitlement matters
Monitors and stays current on environmental issues, SUSMP, LID, SWPPP, and utility requirements
Maintains effective communication and consultation with regulatory agencies and the executive team
Obtains governmental approvals and permits for projects
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university
Registered Civil Engineer in the State of California
Qualified SWPPP Developer certification in the State of California
Valid CADL with state-required levels of active auto insurance
Minimum of ten years of experience in civil engineering (or a related discipline), including design and construction management
Minimum of five years of experience in a high-level engineering management role
Comprehensive working knowledge of civil engineering principles and engineering design
Broad experience in the design and implementation of projects involving site design, grading, roadways, drainage, hydrology, SWPPP, SUSMP, DAMP, LID, water quality, utilities, habitat, environmental considerations, surveying, soils investigations, structural elements, file maps, and legal descriptions
Demonstrated ability to draft effective correspondence to regulatory agencies, including written analyses and supporting applications using appropriate technical language
Experience working with planning and building departments, ACOE, CDFW, and other governmental agencies
Proven experience managing multiple teams
Strong knowledge of design and visualization software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D, or similar tools
Proficiency in site layout, grading, utility design, erosion control, and regulatory approvals
Ability to delegate tasks and direct the work of others
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, consultants, agency personnel, and the public
Ability to read, interpret, and produce maps, surveys, engineering drawings, and graphics
Strong project management and supervisory skills
Excellent negotiation skills
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
Ability to prepare written analyses and supporting applications
Strong mathematical and analytical abilities, including physics
Creative problem-solving skills
