Responsibilities
Service Design & API Architecture
Design and implement our core API layer using tRPC
Define procedures that are efficient, secure, and fully type-safe
Establish clear, consistent patterns for API design that other engineers can build on
Own the data contracts between backend services and React / React Native clients
Ensure APIs are resilient to network latency and avoid over-fetching
Implement complex server-side business logic (e.g., payments, inventory, bookings)
Enforce business rules at the service layer rather than leaking logic into the UI
Monorepo & Modular Architecture
Own backend code organization within a Turborepo
Define boundaries between shared packages and app-specific logic
Prevent circular dependencies and maintain fast build times
Help design a modular architecture that behaves like a monolith but can evolve into services when needed
Write decoupled, well-structured code that can be extracted into standalone services over time
Database, Performance & Scalability
Design and maintain Postgres schemas using Drizzle ORM
Write complex queries and joins while keeping performance tight
Optimize read and write paths to ensure low-latency responses
Implement caching strategies using Redis or Vercel KV
Design and run background jobs for heavy or asynchronous workloads (e.g., image processing, audit logging, search indexing)
Qualification
Required
6+ years of full-stack engineering experience, with a strong emphasis on backend and API development
Deep experience with Node.js and TypeScript in production environments
Strong opinions on API design, with experience building REST, GraphQL, or RPC systems
Clear understanding of the monolith vs. microservices trade-offs and when to choose each
Experience working in a monorepo environment (Turborepo, Nx, or similar)
Advanced TypeScript skills, including heavy use of generics and type inference
Strong database fundamentals, including SQL, schema design, and transaction management
Preferred
Experience with payments systems (e.g., Stripe or Stripe Connect)
Experience building or maintaining search systems (OpenSearch, Elasticsearch)
Experience designing systems that support optimistic UI and real-time updates
Familiarity with serverless platforms and event-driven architecture
