The Intern, Beach Testing will assist in processing and preservation of samples for microbiology and chemistry analysis, perform laboratory analyses, and support water quality monitoring programs.

Responsibilities
Assistance in processing and preservation of samples for microbiology and chemistry analysis
Performs microbiology and chemistry laboratory analyses related duties in support of the MWRA's monitoring programs
Enters data into a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
Performed laboratory analysis, including enumeration of bacterial pollution indicators such as Enterococcus using prescribed procedures
Assists with other chemical, physical or biological laboratory testing
Performs related laboratory duties, calibrating field instruments and preparing materials for field sampling. (e.g. buffers/quality control standards)
Records field and laboratory data on paper and in data logger
Reports to a Laboratory Supervisor II
Adhere to standard laboratory practices and safety requirements
Perform field water quality testing, as required
Assist in the collection of other water quality samples, as needed
Perform related duties as required
Qualification
Required
Must have a valid driver's license
Ability to perform careful laboratory manipulations
Good communication skills
Competency in Microsoft Office Suite software including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
Internship Period: May - Sept
The candidate should have some chemistry/microbiology laboratory skills and have a general understanding of laboratory procedures as demonstrated by completing at least four chemistry/biology/microbiology laboratory courses
Preferred
The preferred candidate will have completed at least the Sophomore year in a science or environmental major
