Responsibilities
With guidance, learns how and creates and implements code for a product, service, or feature reusing code as applicable
Writes and learns to create code that is extensible and maintainable
Learns about and applies diagnosability, reliability, and maintainability, and understands when the code is ready to be shared and delivered
Applies coding patterns and best practices to write code (e.g., leveraging state-of-the-art generative artificial intelligence [GenAI], approaches to source code organization, naming conventions)
With guidance from more experienced colleagues, identifies and escalates blockers or unknowns during the development process, and communicates how they will impact timelines
Understands proposals and develops an understanding of how to apply them under the technical leadership of others
With managerial guidance, tests and explores various design options for a product/solution feature, outlining strengths and weaknesses of each option
Produces code to test hypotheses for technical solutions and assists with technical validation efforts
Helps with and participates in the development of design documents that support simple user stories with oversight
Develops an awareness of the current technology landscape
Escalates findings from investigations to team members for design decisions
Learns about the implications of performance, scalability, resiliency, cost of goods sold (COGS), and other requirements and expectations in systems architecture
Begins to uphold Microsoft standards of security, privacy, and other compliance requirements in systems architecture
Develops an understanding of the importance of building solutions that expand upon the work of others
Contributes to the refinement and integration of feedback in product features by escalating findings from analyses to inform decisions regarding the engineering of products
Builds knowledge, shares new ideas, and shares pinpoints of engineering tool gaps to improve software developer tools to support easier, faster, and more effective software engineering for complex product features
Identifies whether open source or internal code is available to address coding needs for a set of product features, and reuses it in a responsible manner where applicable
Develops higher-level awareness of tools outside current areas of expertise
Helps to identify and/or create tools that are useful for building the product, determining if methods are still applicable for the current solution
Works with partner teams to ensure a product feature works well with the components of the partner team with direct supervision, supporting team efforts to ensure proper end-to-end testing, live-site coverage, scalability, performance, and DRI escalation pathways are established before going live
Customer-Centric Development: Engages directly with customers and product teams to capture feedback, understand demand signals, and refine product messaging—ensuring the voice of the customer shapes product evolution
Lead Live Site Excellence: Drives operational excellence in managing and operating large-scale distributed systems with a high bar for service-level agreements (SLAs)
Leads root cause analyses (RCAs) for key live site incidents and outages, identify systemic improvements, and set high standards for reliability and performance
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven experience coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years
Preferred
Demonstrated expertise in solving complex technical challenges in one or more domains such as distributed systems, AI/ML infrastructure, developer platforms, or cloud services
Experience engaging with stakeholders during integration or deployment phases, with a focus on delivering value and incorporating feedback into product evolution
1+ years of experience designing, building, and operating production-grade software and services at scale, with a proven track record of delivering high-impact solutions
