Cultural Arts Director
Artspace Southern Illinois is a cultural institution dedicated to supporting the arts in the region. The Cultural Arts Director will oversee artistic programming and community engagement, focusing on curatorial leadership, program management, and building relationships to enhance the organization’s impact.

Responsibilities
Plan, curate, and oversee rotating exhibitions, educational programs, artist talks, workshops, and special events aligned with organizational goals
Coordinate all program logistics, including schedules, installation timelines, artist communications, volunteers, and vendors
Collaborate with artists, curators, and community partners to ensure high-quality, accessible, and engaging programming
Evaluate program outcomes using attendance data, participant feedback, and qualitative impact, and recommend refinements as needed
Serve as a visible ambassador for Artspace Southern Illinois’ arts, education, and nonprofit communities
Build and sustain partnerships with artists, schools, civic organizations, local businesses, and cultural institutions
Support outreach strategies that broaden and diversify audiences and strengthen Artspace Southern Illinois’ public presence
Represent Artspace Southern Illinois at public events, meetings, and collaborative initiatives
Support grant writing efforts by providing program narratives, budgets, schedules, and reporting data
Assist with donor cultivation, sponsorship development, and special fundraising events connected to exhibitions and programs
Collaborate with the CEO & Executive Director on earned-revenue initiatives related to programming
Supervise program-related staff, interns, and volunteers as assigned
Staff the Programming Committee and ensure clear, timely communication between staff and board leadership
Ensure compliance with organizational policies, contracts, and grant requirements related to programming
Prepare regular reports on program activity, attendance, and outcomes for the CEO & Executive Director
Staff events, gallery, and retail facility as needed
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree required in Art History, Studio Art, Arts Administration, Nonprofit Management, or a related field
3–5 years in a cultural arts organization, gallery, museum, or related nonprofit setting
Strong organizational and project-management skills
Excellent written and verbal communication
Comfort working with artists, volunteers, donors, and community stakeholders
Proficiency with Microsoft Office or Google Workspace
Flexible schedule with availability for evenings and occasional Saturdays
Ability to lift and move artwork and exhibition materials (with assistance as needed)
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and ethical practice in the arts
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift approximately 25–30 pounds
Visual and auditory acuity sufficient for gallery installations and public events
Preferred
Advanced degree or equivalent experience preferred
Fundraising and outreach experience preferred
Familiarity with email marketing, social media, and basic CRM systems preferred

Artspace 304 was established in July 1987 under the name of Carbondale Community Arts as a joint effort between artists Kathy Sanjabi and Bonnie Moreno, along with the support of local artists and community leaders who shared the common interest of broadening access to arts opportunities for the people of Southern Illinois.
