Hennepin County is seeking an Engineering Technician or Assistant Engineering Technician to support the construction inspection crew and engage in survey and materials testing activities. Responsibilities

Assist in construction inspection, material testing, and construction survey activities
Assist in construction staking and survey computations
Perform or check basic quantity, alignment, mathematical, or geometric calculations for construction projects
Read and interpret construction plans and technical specifications
Observe construction activities for compliance to the project plans and specifications
Perform quality control tests on construction materials
Perform material testing in a lab setting on a variety of construction materials
Perform or check more complex quantity, alignment, mathematical, or geometric calculations for construction projects
May act as chief inspector on simple road or bridge construction projects; act as lead inspector in any category of materials or construction inspection of complex projects
May direct, train, and check the work of technicians in lower level classifications

Required

For hire as an Assistant Engineering Technician (Level I): One of the following: Completion of an approved highway/civil engineering technology or land surveying training program
One or more years of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work
One year of experience analyzing numerical data using computer software applications, or developing and maintaining computerized information system applications
Thirty (30) college semester credits in mathematics, geography, computer science, or engineering related technical courses
A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit
Ability to lift items weighing up to 60 pounds; climb up and down slopes; work outdoors, and around traffic in all weather conditions with or without reasonable accommodation
For hire as an Engineering Technician (Level II): One of the following: Three years or more of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work
Three years or more of college or technical school credits in a related engineering or computer science field
Current certification as a Certified Survey Technician (CST), Level 2
A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit
Ability to lift items weighing up to 60 pounds; climb up and down slopes; work outdoors, and around traffic in all weather conditions with or without reasonable accommodation

Preferred

Certification(s) from the MnDOT Technical Certification Program
Experience operating survey equipment such as total station, levels, and/or tripods
Experience operating inspection and materials testing equipment such as air tester, proctors, and Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP)
Experience using computer software programs such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, and/or MicroStation
Experience operating materials lab testing equipment
Knowledge of math functions such as arithmetic, algebra, and geometry
Knowledge of construction equipment, materials, and methods
Ability to communicate with staff at all levels of the organization
Ability to maintain neat and accurate records
