Responsibilities
Develop and maintain technical / metallurgical expertise to serve as a subject matter expert in the areas of customer processing (e.g. forging, forming, heat treating (Q&T, carburizing, nitriding, induction hardening, etc.), machining), micro-alloy steels, automotive applications (e.g. gears, crankshafts), property testing (e.g. mechanical, fatigue, thermomechanical), and product performance
Enhance and promote the value and advantages of Metallus material solutions through direct customer and industry interactions. Serve as a lead technical metallurgical contact in discussions around new business development, customer processes, challenges, opportunities
Work closely with Marketing, Business Development, Application Development, and other commercial teams to strategically approach opportunities to promote sales growth through new business opportunities or expanding capabilities using thermomechanical testing (Gleeble) and computational modeling (including process modeling (rolling, tube making) and computational thermodynamics)
Lead complex investigative work through the Application Met Lab, especially those that pertain to customer processing of our materials and/or competitors’ materials, failure analysis, and advanced materials characterization. These investigations will result from requests submitted by internal Technical Service employees, Sales employees, Manufacturing or Quality employees, etc. This includes, but not limited to: assembling related mill processing records, customer processing records (if appropriate), trends in related observations; Formulating and implementing a work plan; analyzing results, researched information, independent calculations, and educated assumptions of missing or non-existent information; conferencing with other experts / interested parties; proposing probable causes and/or potential solution; effectively corresponding with interested parties and required resources, via meetings, one-on-one, telephone or email; and completing the investigation via a written report that documents the background, materials, procedures, results and conclusions
Supporting quality & manufacturing to solve complex metallurgical problems and optimize material processing through complex investigations and analysis
Mentor, guide, and train other employees in failure analysis methods, materials characterization, and other metallurgical analyses to be used in the Application Met Lab
