Responsibilities
Provide patients, families, visitors, and staff access to employees who accurately interpret via face-to-face encounters during designated hours
Act as a language liaison between the patient, family, and staff in support of the medical plan of care
Facilitate acquisition of Interpreter services for non-Spanish languages (via OPI/over the phone, VRI/video remote interpreter and/or contract services)
Qualification
Required
High School diploma or equivalent
1-2 years of experience working in a healthcare setting
Current knowledge of medical terminology and procedures
Ability to precisely and accurately translate critical medical information from English to the patient's native language
Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation
Excellent communication and active listening skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information
Ability to interact and communicate with people in-person and over the telephone, often in stressful situations
Selected applicants must meet Spanish proficiency levels defined by Cook Children's Health Care System and measured by objective and nationally recognized oral language, reading, and writing tests prior to employment
All selected applicants are tested prior to an offer being made to determine their Spanish proficiency level, and must test at a proficient level to qualify. Testing will be administered by a contracted testing service. Spanish proficiency levels are verified as part of the employee's annual review
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for Health Care Providers is required within 30 days of employment and must be maintained
