Embedded Systems Engineer
Upgrade Energy builds advanced lithium-ion battery systems for aerial and robotic applications. As an Embedded Systems Engineer, you will design and implement PCB-based embedded systems, focusing on both hardware and firmware, while managing the development from concept to production.
Responsibilities
Design embedded electronic systems for lithium-ion battery packs, charger systems, and related control electronics
Apply electrical engineering fundamentals (analog, digital, power, and mixed-signal) to embedded system design
Create schematics and PCB layouts using KiCad and/or Altium, owning designs from concept through production
Bring up, debug, and modify PCBs, including hands-on lab work, micro-soldering, and board-level rework
Develop and debug hardware alongside embedded firmware on microcontrollers
Debug hardware, firmware, and system-level interactions during development and integration
Build, test, and validate prototypes, executing verification and validation (V&V) test plans and documenting results
Select components, manage BOMs, and evaluate alternates under real supply and manufacturing constraints
Participate in design reviews with mechanical, thermal, battery, and manufacturing engineers
Support transition from prototype to pilot and production, including production test development, ongoing refinement, and customer support
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience
Strong electrical engineering fundamentals applied to embedded systems
Experience designing and debugging PCB-based electronic systems
Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout
Experience working with embedded microcontrollers and hardware–firmware integration
Strong hands-on experience with PCB bring-up, debugging, and rework
Proficiency with standard lab equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, logic analyzers)
Solid understanding of DC electronics, signal integrity, and mixed-signal circuits
Comfortable working in a fast-paced, iterative hardware environment
Preferred
3+ years of experience designing and debugging PCB-based embedded systems
Experience with embedded development in C/C++
Experience with microcontrollers such as STM32, ESP32, PIC, AVR, RP2040, or similar
Experience with battery management systems (BMS) or battery-related electronics
Familiarity with the Texas Instruments battery management and power IC ecosystem
Experience with reflow soldering, micro-soldering, or prototype assembly
Experience with power sequencing, protection, and sensing circuits
Exposure to thermal considerations in electronic or battery systems
Experience supporting PCBA manufacturing, test, or production environments
Bonus: 3D modeling experience (e.g., Fusion 360) for enclosures, fixtures, or integration concepts
Benefits
Work on real embedded systems shipping to real customers
High ownership across hardware and firmware boundaries
Tight feedback loops between design, testing, and production
A culture that values builders over bureaucracy
Clear opportunities for technical growth and leadership
