Responsibilities
Advise on legal issues related to journalism, digital media, user-generated content, and global volunteer contributions
Review internal policies, volunteer agreements, contributor terms, and privacy guidelines
Provide guidance on intellectual property, content licensing, permissions, and attribution
Support risk assessment related to publication decisions, including defamation, safety, and confidentiality concerns
Collaborate with the COO, CMO, editorial leads, and People & Culture team on policy development and organizational compliance
Help review or draft contracts, MOUs, and partnership documents as needed
Offer general legal input to leadership during strategic planning, including growth areas for The Sentinel
Maintain ethical boundaries, protecting the organization while supporting its mission of storytelling, justice, and global community
Qualification
Required
Licensed attorney in good standing
Prior experience doing long-term pro bono or volunteer legal work
Familiarity with media, nonprofit, technology, or employment law
Able to advise a distributed, global volunteer team and work in a collaborative environment
