Chief Legal Officer
Calvert County Government is seeking a seasoned, strategic, and solutions-driven Chief Legal Officer to lead the Office of the County Attorney. This role serves as the chief legal advisor to County leadership, providing counsel on complex municipal, legislative, and civil matters that influence the County’s long-term success.

Responsibilities
Leads and manages all operations of the County’s legal office, including supervising attorneys, paralegals, and support staff
Advises and represents the Board of County Commissioners, departments, boards, and agencies on legal and policy issues
Develops and reviews contracts, resolutions, ordinances, and legal opinions
Coordinates and oversees outside counsel and ensures effective representation in litigation and specialized matters
Directs legislative affairs—drafting legislation, preparing testimony, and advancing the County’s legislative agenda with state and regional partners
Mitigates risk by anticipating legal and operational challenges and developing strategic, preventative solutions
Qualification
Required
Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
Seven (7) to ten (10) years of progressively responsible legal experience, including significant management experience in government or related civil practice
License to practice law in the State of Maryland required
Subject to background investigation
Preferred
Strong understanding of municipal law, public policy, and government operations
Exceptional communication and analytical skills, with the ability to advise decision-makers under pressure
Proven experience managing complex legal projects and staff
