Director of Communications

Arizona Coalition for Change is a community power-building organization that empowers everyday people to transform their community. The Communications Director serves as a senior leader responsible for shaping and executing the narrative strategy for the organization, overseeing all communications to advance advocacy and political power-building goals.

Civic and Social Organizations

Responsibilities

Lead the organization’s overarching narrative and messaging strategy across the organizations ensuring alignment with long-term organizing and political goals
Develop and steward a shared narrative framework that connects people power → policy power → electoral power → governing power
Ensure messaging consistently centers working-class communities, community agency, and collective power
Serve as a senior strategic advisor to leadership on narrative risks, opportunities, and message discipline
Lead and execute all organizational communications, including digital content, email, social media, website content, video, and visual storytelling
Develop and manage integrated communications plans for major campaigns, initiatives, and moments (elections, legislative fights, direct actions, rapid response)
Oversee content calendars and production workflows to ensure consistent, high-quality output across platforms
Maintain and evolve organizational brand voice, tone, and visual identity
Serve as the primary lead on media relations, including pitching stories, managing press inquiries, drafting press releases, and coordinating interviews
Lead rapid response communications during political moments, crises, or attacks—ensuring speed, accuracy, and strategic framing
Prepare leadership, staff, and spokespeople with talking points, message guidance, and media prep
Build and maintain relationships with reporters, editors, and media outlets at the local, state, and national level
Work closely with the Organizing Department to translate base-building work, issue campaigns, and direct actions into powerful public narratives
Partner with organizers to elevate member voices, leadership stories, and lived experience as central components of campaign communications
Support campaign escalation through strategic storytelling that builds public pressure and momentum—without managing campaign execution
Ensure communications reinforce organizing goals such as leadership development, base expansion, and sustained engagement
Lead digital strategy across platforms, including audience growth, engagement, and narrative amplification
Oversee storytelling initiatives such as short-form video, long-form content, email campaigns, and narrative series
Use data and insights to assess message performance and continuously refine strategy
Manage communications staff, consultants, and vendors as needed, setting clear priorities and accountability
Collaborate across departments (Organizing, Political & Advocacy, Data/Research, Operations) to ensure communications are integrated and strategic
Establish metrics, reporting, and learning processes to evaluate communications impact and improve effectiveness over time
Ensure internal alignment so staff understand key narratives, messaging priorities, and communications protocols

Required

5–7+ years of experience in communications, narrative strategy, political communications, or movement-based storytelling
Proven experience leading communications for organizing, advocacy, or political campaigns
Strong understanding of how narrative supports power-building—not just visibility or branding
Experience working alongside organizers and campaign leaders to translate field work into public-facing communications
Demonstrated success in media relations and rapid response
Strong writing, editing, and message development skills
Experience managing digital strategy and content across platforms
Understanding of C3/C4/PAC communications boundaries and compliance
Deep commitment to racial equity, community-led change, and collective power
Ability to operate in a fast-paced, high-stakes, mission-driven environment with clarity and discipline
