Excise Tax Examiner 2, In-Training (ARDE)

Responsibilities
Work with unregistered businesses who voluntarily register to pay prior tax obligations
Assess the tax reporting responsibility of unregistered business leads
Perform pre-audit planning activities
Provide technical support to department staff
Monitor mission critical tax reporting systems to ensure account integrity and data accuracy
Continually monitor the department's tax accounting systems for weaknesses and effectiveness
Assist field audit personnel in research activities
Qualification
Required
Spreadsheet skills to use basic formulas, tables, filtering, and sorting
Document skills to compose messages. Using bolding, white space, bullets, and other formatting to ensure the message is clear
Ability to locate files and keep your electronic files organized
Managing and responding to emails in a timely manner
Ability to understand and solve problems by applying intermediate analytical skills to include collecting all the relevant information and data needed to reach a conclusion
Ability to synthesize data into fundamental issues and manageable components, identifying the logical outcomes from the analyses of the data collected
Ability to research, interpret, and apply federal and state tax laws to determine correct tax reporting
Experience managing multiple assignments or projects simultaneously, ensuring timely completion
Ability to regularly evaluate progress on assignments and adjust organization, priority, time, method, etc. to meet deadlines
Ability to convey complex information in layman's terms to generate understanding and reach agreement
Ability to navigate challenging conversations and deliver unfavorable outcomes about tax implications to businesses and representatives in a professional manner
Experience communicating effectively and professionally, in both verbal and written form
Experience composing written communication that effectively conveys ideas or information to the intended reader
Working well individually and in groups
Effectively able to translate complex, technical concepts into understandable instructions
Utilizing negotiation and persuasion skills to de-escalate and obtain buy-in
Making independent decisions based on the training received
Applying judgement to determine the most accurate action when multiple potential actions could be taken
Showcasing comfort in work environments when decisions are treated on a case-by-case basis
Possess an openness toward changing ideas, responsibilities, strategies, and processes
Experience working with a high degree of autonomy and also participating collaboratively as part of a team
Preferred
Demonstrated professional experience in the above (required) competencies
Four or more years of professional experience in accounting, auditing, tax compliance, or tax administration
A bachelor's degree in accounting
12 semester or 18 quarter hours of college-level accounting
