Parks and Open Space Supervisor

The City of Chino Hills is seeking a Parks and Open Space Supervisor to take on a key leadership role within the Public Works Department. This position oversees the maintenance and care of the City’s parks, landscaped areas, trees, irrigation systems, and open space areas while leading and supporting a dedicated maintenance team.

Responsibilities

Oversee, train, mentor, and evaluate maintenance staff to ensure high-quality parks and open space services
Ensure City parks, landscaped areas, irrigation systems, and open space areas are maintained to established standards
Coordinate and provide training related to landscape maintenance, equipment operation, pesticide application, and safe work practices
Administer service contracts, inspect contractor work, and allocate staff, equipment, and materials efficiently
Plan, prioritize, assign, mentor, supervise, and review the work of maintenance staff involved in the City’s parks and open space maintenance programs
Provide day-to-day leadership to support a high-performance, customer service-oriented work environment
Oversee crews performing mowing, trimming, pruning, irrigation repair, tree maintenance, weed abatement, and landscape installation
Inspect parks and open space areas to assess maintenance needs; schedule work and estimate labor, materials, and equipment requirements
Administer and inspect annual service contracts to ensure compliance with contract standards
Assist in preparing and monitoring departmental budgets, including forecasting staffing and material needs
Respond to public inquiries, complaints, and emergency situations as necessary
Supervise staff including hiring, training, evaluating performance, and addressing deficiencies
Prepare formal staff reports and memorandums to communicate project updates, recommendations, and operational impacts to City leadership
Respond to after-hours staff inquiries
Perform other duties as assigned

Required

Four years of increasingly responsible experience in landscape maintenance work that includes one year of lead or supervisory experience
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by specialized training or coursework in landscape maintenance or a related field
Possession of a California Class C Driver's License
Pest Control Adviser (PCA) and Qualified Applicator License (QAL) issued by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation
Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) issued by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation

Preferred

Five years of experience in landscape maintenance that includes two years of supervisory experience is desirable
Playground Safety Inspector Certificate desired

Benefits

Eligible to receive Tuition Reimbursement up to $3,500 per fiscal year.
FLSA-exempt employees are eligible for 40 hours of Administrative Leave annually, subject to pro-ration upon hire.
Health Benefits: A flexible benefit plan of $2,085 per month is provided for this position.
Deferred Compensation 457(b) Plan: The City will match employee contribution amount up to $200 per month.
City paid $100,000 Group Term Life Insurance Policy (additional life insurance may be purchased by employee).
City paid benefit.
Sick Leave - 96 hours annually (cash out of up to 96 hours when eligible)
Holiday - 12 paid holidays per year
Holiday Winter Closure- (2) paid working days following Christmas Day Holiday to use during City Winter Closure
Floating Holiday - 9 hours accrued pay period 1 of each calendar year
Vacation - 80 hours for years 1-4, 120 hours for years 5-9, 160 hours for years 10+
